Never played the original Elite, but was alway really jealous of people who had it at the time. I'll certainly give this a go if it really does get made.

One nitpick from looking at the video: Shame that space games seem to always to treat space as having an atmosphere but no gravity. I.e. the spacecraft behave more like aeroplanes with turning abilities that aren't possible in a vacuum, and have max speed. I guess it's just what people are used to.

Elite Frontier and First Encounters had physics engines that accurately recreated that sort of thing. I loved flying around space that way but a lot of people didn't like it and prefer a more 'arcade' feel.

You can try out a modded First Encounters here:

Reminds me of Escape Velocity (Nova was the one I played most), I'm too young to have played Elite but I love that type of game, thought it was a shame how few similar things exist.

really hoping this turns into a mmo and gives eve a run for it's money ...which was fine untill they started making it to easy just to milk the cash cow ..
What does it matter now if men believe or no?

The problem with Frontier/First Encounter was that the game became a fight simply to move in the right direction, let alone actually fight other ships or do anything useful. There's definitely a place for quasi-realistic physics in space flight simulation, but Elite's not a simulator, it's a combat and trading game. It looks like Dangerous will head back towards the control of the original elite, which - obviously - will please the purists and original fans (like me ).

In many ways it will be. There will be a single player off-line mode, and both single and multiplayer online modes. In online mode, everything you do impacts a central, consistent, persistent universe - so even if you only ever play single player, your actions will affect the in-game experience of every other player. Basically even single player will take place in a persistent universe which is constantly evolving. And there'll be multiple multiplayer modes including a free-for-all which sounds like a typical MMO playstyle.

Obviously, however, that's just my understanding of what they've said so far, and all of that is subject to change at Mr Braben's slightest whim (this being very much his pet project).

Isn't the new Elite just Eve Online?

I played both and for me its going to be hard for a new game to get close to Eve as a modern day Elite.

No. Eve is a 'point-and-click' space sim, you don't actually fly the ship so leaves you feeling a little detached (At least it did for me) Elite is a space combat simulator, you shoot ships down/survive with your flying skills instead of just superior stats.

    Different beast.

Re: News - Elite: Dangerous funding ship docks safely, loaded with booty

I backed this project on kickstarter, this game should have been made years ago.

I played the original elite when I was about 6 so I didnt appreciate it for a few years after that, but it was still a classic. Had Frontier on the Amiga, it fit on a single 1.44" floppy disk, that was very impressive. Was one of the best games I've ever played, a few niggly things aside like combat - once you traded your way to a bigger ship it wasn't a problem though. The sheer number of systems to explore was awesome, the fact that you could actually just fly down onto planets at the time was amazing. Also - all on one floppy disk. Lol.
Had first encounters on the pc on CD, woo! Was a bit of a dog, I seem to remember having a lot of trouble getting it to work properly. It was very similar to Frontier, but with some FMV and new ships etc, with events.

Hopefully they DON'T turn this into an MMO, I'd hate for the game to turn into a grind this for x hours, get a crappy icon in my inventory. Yes multiplayer, but not on a hosted server that I have to log into every time to play. I've played EVE, it's a different breed of game, it's click to move and it's just far too political for my taste. Elite was more about the exploration and you controlled the ship first person.

Have you watched the vids on the Kickstarter page? In one of them DB goes into some detail about how he envisages mulitplayer - and the persistent universe - working. There'll be lots of options, including single player, so no, it won't just be another MMO. But your actions - even in single player, unless you choose to play off-line - will impact the entire universe, and be reflected in the experience of all players, everywhere. It's an interesting model, and I look forward to seeing if they can make it work.

OMG! must achieve 2nd existence to play Elite again. It's cool they got the funding. There must have been a last minute rush as they were behind a few weeks ago.
