If Sony and Microsoft go head to head with launches in 2013, then we are in for mega interesting times.
Would imagine price will be the main factor in sales - competition will be rife.
I think the games makers know something we don't
The Christmas games release list was pretty thin this year, maybe they already have inside info about the release of new consoles and are just not giving it up.
Given that both the new consoles will be using custom versions of existing PC based CPU & GPU combinations, and will no doubt be roughly equal in performance, it's all the 'extras' that will decide who comes out on top..
Either way, I'm just glad that after 7-8yrs, DX9 based games will no longer be the baseline for PC conversions.
It may actually be worth upgrading my 4850 in 2014.....I sure as hell wasn't go to pay £200-300 for a few extra high-res textures included in the PC conversions as a sap to PC gamers.
Whichever one of the next generation that doesn't have a fee for playing games online will probably be on my shopping list at some point in the future. Plenty of life left in my PS3 I reckon though, if the Wii and phone/tablets have taught us anything it that games can be fun without needing cutting edge graphics.
There will be 3 things to make or break this
A) who goes to market first
B) who has the largest range of recognisable games at launch
C) Price
another major bearing is the Sony patent that prevents games being sold second hand, if the xbox doesnt use this then I for one will go xbox over sony just for this
I know a couple of people at wholesalers who are remaining tight lipped about possible releases bar when I said I expected the price to be around £550-600 for the console and I wasnt corrected...
Ouch!If that is the eventual price of the '720 then I can't see me being able to get it - unless Microsoft's going to be doing some very good deals for folks trading in their current 360's.
We've got two 360's in the house and there's no way I can afford £1200 to replace the pair.![]()
Will be interesting when more details arise. Always been an xbox man but lots of friends have switched to PS and can see me doing same when new one launched unless Microsoft pull something out of the bag.
If the rumours of 30FPS are true, then they can keep it and I will wait for the console>PC ports to start benefiting from the new console architecture.

I'm probably being dumb but what's wrong with a 30 frames/second target, or are you saying that 30 will be the hard limit? Current box does appear to need an update since I've seen times where it's noticeably struggling to keep up - e.g. fast view pan with a lot of enemies around in Far Cry 3 being the most recent example.
Actually given the progress in graphics tech I've got to wonder why someone hasn't grasped the nettle and gone for an upgradable design. Then you get to keep pace with progress, keep the console "current" for a lot longer, and do a nice earner in selling upgrades to the punters. Do the graphics card as an enclosed module that can be easily replaced (which also would have removed the need to return RRoD'd 360's where the graphics heatsink had popped off).
Oh and I'm hoping the 720 has user replaceable/upgradable storage - same as the current models.
That looks stunning however ill stick with my rig at the moment
