Re: Features - QOTW: Are you happy in your current job?

    Generally yes:

Hours - Generally very good, with very little overtime required
Pay - I could get more elsewhere, but I can easily live off my current rate of pay & i'm not too materialistic
Travel - Just enough & I get to visit some interesting places abroad two or three times a year.
Work - Mostly interesting (training & coding), although sometimes rather dull / tedious (analyzing crashes & log files).
Environment - I've worked in the same place since I left Uni, so know everyone well. Pretty good, apart from the odd annoying character!

I would give it 8/10 - enough so I haven't ever looked elsewhere for employment as yet.

Re: Features - QOTW: Are you happy in your current job?

Bit of both for me really. Most of the people I work with are good fun, but I need to earn more money really, and there is not much opportunity to move up. It's safe, as it's the NHS and we're short staffed as it is, so definitely don't need to worry about losing my job. On the other hand, being the NHS, the senior management are terrible and offer us little support and only care about saving money and meeting targets. Also, thinking about it, it's a pretty low down job, so I can doss around a fair bit and nobody notices, which is a bonus lol. Never known what I want to do though, which makes things a little tricky, found this job by accident after being on the dole.

Loved most of my old jobs, fave was National Instruments wayyy back in late 80s. Always been in electronics whether it was design, development, production, service/calibration, or more recently sales, I loved em all

Now medically retired and yes, I miss working !
    Cheers, David

    Elves are people too!!

Im a student but i work part time at a River Island (long important work i know). Ive found a good balance between uni work, work there and my social life. Great bunch of people and laid back managers who know what they are doing/wont make you do anything they wouldnt do themselves. So all in all yes im happy.

Never, EVER believe that kind of interview promise, unless they'll put it in writing, complete with any conditions, in the offer letter. If they won't do that, ask yourself, why not, if they mean it?

That doesn't mean don't take the job, just discount and ignore any and all such 'jam in the future' comments. That way, if it doesn't happen, you don't resent it as you didn't believe it, and if by chance it does happen, it's an unexpected and pleasant surprise.
Funny thing you have mentioned this so called "guaranteed bonus". I was in the very same shoes on the interview and replied - "If its guaranteed why don't you give it to me straight away"?
Still took the job but at the higher rate they were offering. 3 years down the line noone got any bonuses so it was good to negotiate in first place!

Ask them why not as well. At the interview. Make them squirm. Their response will tell you a lot about whether you want to work for them.
I'll add that this is often not deliberate deception - they will often believe it themselves.
If I'd been told guaranteed bonus I'd be particularly irritated if they then refused to back that up in writing. So much so that unless the job sounded amazing in every other way, I'd probably decline any offers from them.

    Good point.

Personally, getting a feel for how they will be to work for is perhaps more important than the money. I mean, the pay has to be sufficient, but I'd rather have a bit less in a job I enjoyed with nice people, than a bit more in a job I hated because of the attitude of the company. It's not all about pay, especially if you want to be happy, or even just content, in your job.

Re: Features - QOTW: Are you happy in your current job?

Sadly NO! I work for a large telco and used to have an interesting job doing software design. They off shored it all and made us into admin people. And now they have taken that off us and basically we twiddle our thumbs. We call it "shaking the tree" becauase they just want us to leave. But their are no jobs so we stay unhappy!

Re: Features - QOTW: Are you happy in your current job?

Of course I'm satisfied. I'm posting this from work.

But really, as I often tell people, this job is a compromise. I get paid okay, and I work close to home (which was my wife's condition when our second child was on its way). The people are nice too. On the other hand, getting into an old existing software system isn't fun. I would much rather help design and build something from scratch.
