Re: News - Apple's updates to MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac range

Excelent updates to some already great products
Shame about the removal of optical in the imac
But look how thin it is!
The retina mbp, is good, but it bugs me that its not upgradeable in ram or hdd, what you buy is what you get untl you upgrade to a new one
Its a shame they couldnt have retina'd the standard one that has upgradeable ram and hdd
Same with imac, its beautiful, but...while its supposadly upgradeable, i wouldnt know where to start

It will be interesting to see what ifixit does with these to work them out
    Lovely machines though
And the mac mini remains user serviceable, twit the bottom off for instant ram access, hdd is a few more steps, but nothing too difficult

I'm a little bit surprised that Apple hasn't jumped into the Touch-screen All-in-one market yet. With the way Apple manages to shift products there's no doubt it would be successful.

Although I suppose having an iMac + the touch trackpad sorta acts in the same way as a touch AIO.

Re: News - Apple's updates to MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac range

Great way to make them even more underpowered... there's no way you'd be able to make use of the higher res display (which is a move I am MUCH in favour of!) with that atrocious graphics potential. For something that costs SO MUCH (the Macbook Pro I have through work was SOOOOO expensive), I would really expect them to have better hardware. No gaming on that thing! Also, I would expect these to be as unreliable as all of the macs I have used over the last 5 years: shockingly bad. My current MBP has been back to Apple 4 times in the year I've had it... Certainly wouldn't waste my own money on their overpriced, slow garbage computers, and I'm lobbying work to stop wasting charity money on them, too.

Another lovely Mac Mini. The iMac looks amazing, but I don't see why a desktop all-in-one computer needs to be so absolutely thin, and the lack of an optical drive is annoying for people who like to rip the physical media they buy. I worry about the ability for the HD4000 to cope with the retina display in the 13" MacBook Pro Retina, would it have been such a pain to squeeze in a discrete GPU into this Pro product? iPad Mini Meh.

13.3in MBP with Retina is $1,699 in the US, plus local taxes. £1,449 in the UK. Bah, humbug. Should be £1,299 max.

    Excellent updates to great products?
You then go on to list a load of flaws... i'm confused.

Although 90% of your posts seem to be pro-apple without any real deliberation or explanation as to why you come to this conclusion.

Yeah very disappointing, although it seems to be a common trend across laptops in general thanks to ultrabooks. Apparently the intel graphics is 'good enough'

    I whole heatedly disagree.

I also really don't understand why its so important for an all in one PC to be quite so slim, its not like it needs to be portable?! Surely all that does is make it more difficult to engineer unnecessarily

Because it looks cool, and looking cool costs more. Oh, and you can't upgrade it, so bang goes adding a bit more RAM or a new hard drive to give it a little extra life. You'll just have to get a new one instead. With the internals based heavily on the Mac Book, I have to wonder if the thinner design using less materials, actually makes it cheaper to produce than the previous model. The design stage will be more expensive, but after that you are left with a lower cost per unit. Profits looking good there.

Except uni body designs are extremely wasteful and expensive to manufacture. I much prefer tub and top (I just made that name up... But I like it :-D) designs.

Re: News - Apple's updates to MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac range

The top end iMac looks pretty impressive for a slim AIO PC:

    http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/hom...ac/family/imac

27" IPS screen,an option of a Core i7 3770 and a downclocked GTX680 with even the option of a 768GB SSD,or even a hybrid 1TB or 3TB drive which has a 128GB SSD. I wonder how it will compare in price to the high end HP AIO PCs which are not cheap ether??

    Edit!!

It seems the IGP does have a much lower clockspeed than the desktop GTX680:

Well there isnt a lot of scope for heat dissipation inside a case like that without stupid fans, no surprise they have to down clock the crap out of it. Neverless the engineering achievement is impressive.

The i7 and 680 option must be pushing past 2k though, adding in some form of flash storage (hybrid sounds like a decent option) i dread to think what the price will be.

The IGP looks like it won't be that much faster than the current GTX680M:

    http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/de...specifications

OTH,we might be getting to GTX580 level now.
