Cool and all but I don't see how it's practically useful.

Agreed i don't get the practical point of this. However as a feat of sheer engineering this is fascinating and maybe the next step to windows or big panes of glass you can use multi-touch to control. Like in many sc-fi movies.

shop displays, vending machines = a useful application for transparent displays. Phones, not so good

Exactly! Why would you even make a phone transparent? Its one of those money making products, it has no use but makes money because its cool and new!
