Re: News - Valve releases Steam for Linux Ubuntu client software

Yes, but, what games currently work in Steam for Linux? The article suggests that game developers have to specifically support Linux, so the situation has not changed very much at all.

Re: News - Valve releases Steam for Linux Ubuntu client software

Obviously the PC isn't going anywhere as the primary computer OS for gaming but I think it's nice that the support is there. Plus, with SteamPlay, if I ever get a linux box for gaming, I know the titles I have bought that have multi-OS support will work without needing an additional copy.

Thumbs up Re: News - Valve releases Steam for Linux Ubuntu client software

Just tried TF2 to see if it worked and was amazed it ran without hassle first time.

I also got a Tux in my inventory which Steam says isn't tradeable but in the press release says is. Not that I'm into collecting online tat, just wanted to give it to someone I know who does

PS Some of my previously purchased Windows games (Penumbra, Cave Story, Amnesia) appear in the Linux library but others that have Linux versions (Darwinia, Multiwinia) don't.

PPS Using Ubuntu 12.04 32bit on an old Nforce board, Core2: some errors logged relating to Steam libraries but didn't crash PC or cause any system instability. Complete Noob @ Linux btw

Wow, X3 Reunion on linux? pretty good. Shame its not X3 Terran Conflict. But if you've not tried it and can get it cheap on the sale give it a go It's a great space sim.

Re: News - Valve releases Steam for Linux Ubuntu client software

Thanks directhex for that list - didn't realise the support was so extensive.

Got me thinking now whether I can slap a drive on the side of my Windows/Gaming PC and give this a spin. Ubuntu is my main OS anyway (Windows being relegated to gaming and one or two programs - like Paperport - that don't have valid Linux equivalents.)

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Re: News - Valve releases Steam for Linux Ubuntu client software

Fabulous news! I can't wait for all of my Valve games to come along! I own the Half-Life 2 games, the Left 4 Dead games, the Portal games, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, and DOTA2 but have only actually played Team Fortress 2 and an ever so tiny bit of Left 4 Dead. When I heard the news that Steam is coming to Linux, I decided to postpone playing them even further. Hope it happens soon!

Re: News - Valve releases Steam for Linux Ubuntu client software

Well i'm gobsmacked. Even when they issued the press release way back, i didnt honestly believe that they'd be able to gather the depth of games required for it to be meaningful, but here they are.
Even if literally nothing else is developed to support this, this is an absolute sucess right there - i know so many people who wont go with Linux because of the final stumbling block - no games support. Now that has gone, I think that Valve could become credited with bringing Linux finally to where it deserves to be - on a par with any other modern OS.
I'm commenting on an internet forum. Your facts hold no sway over me.

As a non-Linux user for the most part, I've now got an instant collection of 30 Linux games already (a dozen bought in the current sale). That's pretty impressive IMHO ; just waiting on a few more like Day of Defeat: Source and Left 4 Dead to appear (as I thought L4D and most Source-based titles would be on the launch list tbh).

Looking forward to the Steam Box, wonder why it's taking so long...
