Re: News - Samsung Galaxy Altius smartwatch screens leaked?

With these smart watches, they NEED to give them a secondary battery that only powers the time display function.

Having a watch that can could run out battery and no longer display time is a disaster scenario.*

*I mean run out quicker than conventional watches..

@bledd This is where the breakthrough of being able to have a combo LED/eInk display would be great, too.

I'll stick with Pebble for now, thanks

I am curious how the whole smartwatch market will play out though - touch screen ones are just far too big on your wrist at the moment (until we get bendable paper thin touch screens anyway!) and having to use buttons takes away from the potential uses..pebble is excellent for what it is (really just notifications, time and a secondary display for simple information) but as yet no-one seems to have found a "must have" selling feature for them yet.

Pretty certain that it will be Apple or Samsung that finally crack this though - we'll likely see "entries" from both companies in the next few years, and it will be really interesting to see what they come up with.

My favourite idea so far though is to use them as "presence" devices. So that could be as simple as not having to input your iTunes/Google password when purchasing from the respective app stores, or not having to put your code in/look at your phone to unlock..or even security based so your watch could beep/vibrate if it detects your phone is more than 10m away. Simple but effective..if the price was right!

Re: News - Samsung Galaxy Altius smartwatch screens leaked?

Most of these watches are doomed for failure. It doesn't matter how elegant the OS is, or how responsive the touchscreen is, or even how vibrant the display is. Each time you touch the screen you black out a huge portion of display. Can you imagine if you have an oversized hand. Guess what most men do. A possible solution would be the pointing device from Crucialtec. How else would they do it?

Hmmm, I'm glad these companies are trying new concepts etc but until they can get them to the size of a regular watch I wouldn't be interested. I dislike chunky watches as it is never mind these horrible plastic monstrosities. Ugly as sin.

It's already out and shipping - backlogs will be cleared by end of march (ish) too

@TonyHouston - you are right, which is one of the (many many) reasons that any even remotely successful smart watches so far has not had a touch screen.

Re: News - Samsung Galaxy Altius smartwatch screens leaked?

I'd probably rather wear a smartwatch than a ordinary watch tbh. Hopefully as more are released the prices of these will come down, and I might be able to purchase one.
