the price point this will come at and running the unreal engine 4 engine without a silly specced pc looks to be good value, regardless of whats under the hud, those were some nice visuals and a sign of what is possible

Well what we have is probably 8 times faster than the PPE in the PS3's Cell, which was a high-clocked, but low IPC, in-order CPU. It's not as great as having a quad-core 4.4GHz Piledriver, but on the other hand that would have upped the cost and TDP of the system greatly. In terms of a games console it is more than adequate, if the programmers make use of all 8 cores (or however many cores Sony lets them use). Given that modern game engines and graphics libraries are becoming more and more multithreaded, it's not a major issue. It's also a given that in three years time the PS4 will look weak next to a fairly decent gaming PC, but that's how it is.
No doubt they didn't give specifics on the HDD size due to the fact they'll have a 'premium' console offering more space for £100 more.
The choice of an 8 core jaguar should be great news for owners of PD and BD as well as bringing more of a gap in gaming between i7 and i5. Maybe more cores will be coded for, which is always good when some PC games still use only 2 cores. Consoles won't hold PCs back for now
Seems like pretty good specs to me. Surprised how much everyone is moaning. Did you all really expect to get a console that contains the parts of a £1000+ PC that from 12 months in the future, and all for ~£350?
Also, making like-for-like comparisons about console and PC components is pretty pointless. If the system spec is nailed down, you can make all kind of optimisations that simply are not possible when programming for generalised PC hardware.
But for me, the main point to bring home is that at least this will bring PC gaming into the current decade. No more console ports from something that's ~10 years old.
that's a big step over the PS3 probably a bigger step than the PS2 --> PS3
No Cell CPU though? That looks dead in the water.

Wasn't one of the original functions of Steam the ability to play-as-you-download? Certainly on GldSrc games? Not trying to belittle the PS4 but consoles emulating the PC scene from a decade ago doesn't light any fires here
Sounds very very good.
8 cores and a AMD CPU
A GPU which is like the HD7850 ... wow! Just look at the jump from their NVIDIA 7800GT to the ATi HD7850!
I dont think 8GB of DDR5 is necessary. 4 GB of DDR3 would have been enough. This is surely to drive up the price ?
Disappointed that the controller doesnt have MOVE built in.
GDDR5 has a massive amount more bandwidth than DDR3 - essential for games.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
This is true - the only real advantages to moving to x86 are potential cost reductions (due to better part availability) and the fact that it will be several orders of magnitude easier to develop for the PS4 when you come from a PC background..meaning hopefully more, higher quality games.
The big downside is that x86 is by no means the "best" or most efficient architecture for computing - it has too many limiting factors..there is a big reason that there has been a huge shift towards RISC in recent years, and in many ways its a shame to see them move away from it. This of course then opens up comparisons between a "PC" and "PS4" in ways that most people couldn't wouldn't do before.
So from a pure technology point of view it's not the cleverest/smartest move - but business wise is definitely is..more better quality games, simpler ports, cheaper hardware, less R&D required whilst still maintaining that key console advantage of being fixed, highly optimised hardware? That business case far outweighs any disadvantages, both for Sony and for the average consumer.
As long as they figure out an upgrade path so that we don't all need to add yet another box under the TV (i.e: a way to play our PS3 games without re-purchasing them) they are on to a winner here I think, now that we know they are not locking games to consoles
Yeah, I was corrected on that this morning by a couple of people on here - see this link:

sorry hexus i watched all of it last night and not once did they say a date or say near x mas dont get peoples hopes up as you know there is too many xbox fanboys here
They said 'Holiday 2013'
Plus, announcing in this year if they don't intend to release it for Christmas wouldn't make great marketing sense, they'd likely lose a ton of PS3 sales.
