Is it really necessary to splash out a new phone every year ?

Re: News - Samsung Galaxy S4 to launch on 14th March

It's not really 8 full cores as far as I understand but 4 new fast ones and 4 old type to drop back to for less demanding times. It will probably be in the Note 3 or more likely the note 10.1 replacement that I should think quite a few are waiting to hear about.

OilSheikh, I always used to want my new phone the day of release as I buy sim free so am not tied to a contract so I can show off (it's cheaper than a new car). Since I bought a Nexus 10 however I'm a little loathe to do it again as I use the tablet much more now.

What I'm really looking forward to hearing more about is the just announced Samsung homesync, that type of device would tie everything together and eliminate the need for a pc I think. It could download torrents and run Xbmc, I have high hopes for it, especially if it's under £200.

I'm not bothering for at least another 12 months. My S2 does everything I need from a phone, instead I'm going to get onto cancellations with 02 and beat my monthly debit down to £10 a month.

Really I wanted to see the Octa, ideally equipped with a Mali-T600 series or a PowerVR6000. I'm a little unexcited by this release in general (hovering over the screen with your hand is pointless to the extreme) but if Samsung can improve battery-life and refinement I'll still consider upgrading my S3 as I'm on a one year contract.

As a consumer? No i think every 2 years is probs a minimum for 95% of people. As a manufacturer, yeah i think they need to keep ahead. The market is pretty fierce and if you dont keep things fresh then consumers move on. Remember there are people renewing or about to renew their contract all year round. Give them something to look forward too!

Necessary? No. But I think of smartphones as mini laplops.....and if you carry a laptop around daily it will probably last ~3 years.

Now, with most contracts being 18-24 months, you might as well get a new one at contract renewal.

Nope - apart from anything else, aren't most folks on 24 month contracts these days?

I bought my S3 SIM-free and have been utterly unimpressed by the rumours of the S4, so I'll giving Samsung's latest a miss - I just can't see anything about the S4 that's enough of a "must have" to make me want to go through the expense of changing.

Next year though - especially if LTE starts to rollout outside of cities and gets cheaper - might be a different case...

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Will it have Gorilla Glass 3 and be waterproof? If it does; count me in.

Re: News - Samsung Galaxy S4 to launch on 14th March

Whilst there are talks of octocore CPUs in phones, I'm still on my single core iPhone 4 haha. I'm beginning to find the screen a bit small, but I'm not really a fan of having such a big phone such as the S3.

Do we really need so many cores on a phone though? It seems to me that software is behind hardware most of the time, but I guess it could be hard to optimise software due to so many different hardware configurations.

It should be, that waterproof stuff is now a year old but it seems we got pay a fair bit to send off a phone to get it, I guess these mugs tried charge too much to the big boys.

That is a problem aimed at Android, getting a bit easier as the hardware appears to be settling down a little bit more

Re: News - Samsung Galaxy S4 to launch on 14th March

I only hope s4 is smaller than s3 regardless of screen size. If its any bigger, then I will not be able to use it as I find s3 to be challenging to use with one hand. Imo s2 seems to be the perfect size in galaxy lineup.
