Sorry for buying some of these always on internet games and never having any issues due to the fact that umm my internet is always on hehe :)
how do people manage with MMO games?
Re: News - Latest SimCity game launch offers no fun, just frustration
I hope EA shareholders ask some very pointed questions to the company about the cost effectivness of this statergy. After all the lost sales, cost of writing and deploying the fixes, the bad publicity and not to mention the cost of actually running all of these servers in the first place.
I cam't believe that the analysis of the costs of these measures offset the benefits of preventing piracy and only solid business ground can they be undermined

Unfortunately, not everyone's internet is good enough quality to remain constantly connected, and with Origin wasting bandwidth to rummage through your files like a pervert in your bins, some folks are gonna be wary about that errant data.
There is also the issue of mobile gaming; long train journey? Want to play a strategy god-sim to waste away a few hours? Guess you're still only left with OpenTTD

The issue is, you could easily present data in a way which suggests every pirated instance is a lost sale. It's hard to argue for and against because each circumstance will be unique.
But you can't argue against poor sales combined with zero piracy. Maybe I'm just been hopeful, but I don't see this been far away from a petition to government that forces certain conditions on sales such as this one. You have to be told up front how long the servers will be online for, there has to be an appropriate amount for demand, or sales availability type thing.
Re: News - Latest SimCity game launch offers no fun, just frustration
Apparently this can't be pirated because the code for your regions and cities sits on the servers. Simply saying this will be pirated won't actually give you a game you can play without being connected, as without hte serverside code you cannot play.
Unless the pirates come up with a way to rewrite the game and include the server code then this game can't be pirated.
Thusly, poor sales figures in this instance cannot be blamed on pirates. Just bad launch day server management.
I'll be getting my copy this week. All the issues ought to be resolved by then.
p.s. I never had any Error 37 (or whatever) with Diablo 3. That played perfectly for me.

I put my money in Civitas and keeping my fingers crossed. My Old SC4 is going fine... for now.

And now they've apologised, for being 'dumb'...

Screw them. Single player game that's always-online? Won't buy it now, won't buy it ever.
It's easier with Sim City as it's not the kind of game I care about. D3 I would have bought but didn't - luckily it's not like there's a shortage of action RPG clickfests that _do_ allow offline single-player.

I don't buy that they underestimated things, I didn't buy it with Blizzard/Diablo 3 as well. I strongly believe that somewhere along the line someone thought "this isn't enough for launch day, but things will settle down soon enough, let's bide our time.", that's not on for any game, let alone one that is traditionally a single player experience.
Re: News - Latest SimCity game launch offers no fun, just frustration
I must be a lucky one then, not had a single issue with it yet, and tbh I really couldn't care less about DRM or the prices on Origin. For me its simple, if I like it I'll buy it, if I don't fancy it I wont buy it.
I must be in a minority in not giving a ounce of crap about how they market or what they put in their games (whoever the developer/publisher), everyone has a choice to buy something or not.

I feel that you are missing the point.
You should not need an internet connection to play a locally installed single player game. to me it feels like ea thinks everyone is a criminal and keeps all their users under watch while they play.
the other problem is how long are ea going to keep the servers online for it? in 10 years people may be unable to play the game they purchased because the servers are costing ea to much to run.
Just think if ea apply this to all their games and release alot of mobiles games then you will not be able to play their games when on holiday due to region and also without paying stupidly high amounts for bandwidth in other countries. no matter what ea do someone will get past it. EA Should focus on providing a product which people will want to buy. I generally prefer console games because so far I have not needed to put up with this sort of crap I simply buy the game and play it. I find it funny how games like crossfire (a free fps) has an anticheat system that crashes skype and doesn't allow process explorer ( a free tool from microsoft like task manager) running but every match you have people using wall hacks.
most of the systems that are meant to stop cheating and piracy normally just affect legitimate users.
no matter what ea say enough people always buy their games and would be more likely to if you could play a single play installed game offline. a small number of people will always pirate but the majority will buy the game. companies should stop treating their customers like criminals by forcing this crap.

Perhaps, but that's not what we're talking about here. There are some connected features of SimCity and it is not fully locally installed*. Now whether they have these server features in order to justify an always on connection, or whether they need the always on connection for these features is perhaps an interesting debate, but it's kind of moot given that the features are present.
I think it's always unwise to use generalisation - thankfully we are in a situation where games are still a luxury, and we have free choice whether to play them or not. As such, I don't think we can be justified in ever saying 'X must always be like Y' or whatever - the makers are quite justified in doing whatever they like, and we have the choice to play the game or not.
edit: *At least, that's what they said. Now we know slightly different...

My issue is, people who legitimately bought the game are unable to play the game because too many people who legitimately bought the game are trying to access a system that was implemented to prevent people playing the game illegally.
I'm trying to think of a better way of wording it.... EA's anti piracy system is failing because too many people legitimately bought the game. That is warped.
