Yeah, the server-side CPU requirements were unreal if I remember rightly, and of course the servers were all tied into Multiplay and Rackage because EA only did a deal with them, so there was absolutely no choice in the matter.
Most of the BF2 servers repurposed as 2142 Titan Mode would just repeatedly fall over.

Utter milk factory, from the very start.
First they sold the limited edition only. Then they sold 'back to karkland' DLC, then they sold premium edition..
The option to buy Premium was never offered at the start of BF3.
All my friends are a mixture of premium, some who just have the limited edition, some who just have karkland dlc.. it's a complete mess trying to play with everybody at the same time..
the whole idea from the very start was the milk the heck out of everyone.
Limited Edition got the B2K offering.
Premium was launched with CQ, so the chances are if you missed out on the LE of the game and you bought B2K separately, you were just very unlucky.
It arguably an egregious revenue stream, but its one that could have been avoided.
