I think the article could really do with some more information.
Firstly,AMD actually beat expectations, and posted a smaller loss than expected and CPU sales increased by 12% it seems.
I would have said thank god for the consoles keeping them afloat and holding Intel's prices somewhat in check, but then I remembered a £700 5GHz white elephant.
No, and that's where they shine, at the value for money end of the market. Posting large losses, given a lifeline that could make them profitable, and they do something as bizarre as this. Bit off topic I suppose, and I apologize for that. However, stick to what you are good at, APUs and 'good enough for gaming' CPUs, don't waste money on point scoring when you can't afford to.
It'll be interesting to see their results, or even their projections, for the next few quarters. I'm rather hoping that AMDs "Console Monopoly" income will allow them to develop a new CPU architecture and get back on terms with Intel. I'm getting a bit bored of Intel releasing incremental improvements and price gouging for them.

It seems graphics card sales are up too.
Well, I too am bored with Intel incremental improvements and price gouging, but if AMD make some money they'd be mad to spend it all on some vanity project to retake the CPU crown. Not only are Intel able to massively outspend them in CPU R&D and in having a process node advantage, Intel don't exactly play fair to say the least.
No, if AMD make some money they should try to avoid directly competing with Intel by finding some niche.
Graphics and Visual Solutions segment,,
AMD should give it a name....... like ATI

I expect AMD will make an absolute killing from sales of CPUs for the PS4 (I'm defecting from the Xbox after MS really shot themselves in the backside with their crazy DRM)
Interests: kicking the ass of technical problems and gaming.
