They need to at least have the potential for cranking to provide enough power to run the thing - 1 minute cranking for 30s screen time isn't going to cut it (iPhone charger that is).
unless you want a huge cranking mechanism I can't see how you will get it to provide more power
Crank on the back of a basic 2G phone with an eInk screen would be more practical than a iphone I think.
I'm waiting for a wind powered generator. Flatulence has got to be useful for something....
