Either would do I suppose. they all do it just in different ways. Personally I will stick with google until another viable alternative to Crapple comes along.

Why not? MS have been slammed in the past for this kind of situation, so why not return the favour when they're on the receiving end?

Whilst it's not exactly Googles fault that they're numero uno, iOS and Android pretty much dominate the Smart phone market. Surely we want more competition from other OS's for the benefit of all...?

Here's another one for you.... All's fair in love and war.

Yup it's kind of fair in that sense.

The issue is that shouldn't the governing authorities be doing this on their own, not needing a poke from someone who has vested interests.

While I think that Microsoft is trash talking, I agree that Google should get the same scrutiny Microsoft got. I expect a browser ballot screen will be implemented in future EU Android versions.

Google should be scrutinised, but for their data mining. Not because Nokisoft keep peddling crap people don't want at a price they're not willing to pay for. Their inability to break into the smartphone market is their own failing.

Re: News - Microsoft and Nokia ask EU to act over Android mobile monopoly

Personally I think it is pretty obvious. Google's model involves making the bulk of their money from advertizing/information. Microsoft/nokia make a greater proportion of theirs from the upfront sales, therefore do not need to lean so heavily on the marketing/info side. IT'd be nice if google could offer a paid option for many of their services that kept your info out of the hands of others, but doing so would weaken the strength that comes from having all that info in the first place, and potentially devalue the info that still remained in the system because of it. The choice is yours, pay up front or see more ads and share more info.

Meanwhile, more clarity on what info and who gets to see it would be nice to see upfront in a clear format from ALL companies. That way there'd be no argument - if you choose to use this product, this is what you are agreeing to share (and with these companies).

Re: News - Microsoft and Nokia ask EU to act over Android mobile monopoly

Well given that any manufacturer can download the Android source, compile it and use it on their phones without any of the Gapps if they wish....I'm not really sure what the issue is here?
Other companies have got in on the act (and carriers) and had their apps bundled with phones for years.

Reminds me of IE being bundled with the OS.

Since when is 64.1% market share a monopoly? This case fails at the first hurdle.

I would like for data collection to be more transparent and most importantly be an opt-in situation rather than finding the setting to opt-out.

Nokia need to be careful when it comes to complaining about data mining... As for products, I really like the Lumia series. I certainly wouldn't call it crap!

Re: News - Microsoft and Nokia ask EU to act over Android mobile monopoly

And what about iOS? Do they ever get targeted by this type of stuff?

I can see why MS are going down this route but it shouldnt need their efforts to make it happen, its hard to call Google out on their browser though because you dont have to supply the device with all the gapps, its an open source browser that is normally supplied (only recently some have used chrome?)so it doesnt make them money. Data mining is a different matter but everyone is just as bad...

    But who is?

Our last government was massively in favour of invasion of personal privacy and rights, this current lot aren't doing anything to stop matters.

Who is going to be keeping an eye on such things? Most kids, as seen by a recent PCC Spokeschild don't really think of the consequences of their digital actions. Companies which use data as a business model aren't remotely interested to remind them of this fact.

The one that amazed me was the targeted advertising on Facebook for pay day loans. It was either random or a rather good bit of NLP I saw as a friend was replying to another friend about not been able to afford to come out for a party.

I think the really worrying sign here is that it is Microsoft who is complaining about this, I don't blame Microsoft for the fact no one else (who should have been) is.

Most of the tech press love google. I know people who use g-mail who really, really shouldn't. Even in the aftermath of the Peterus affair, many still don't think of the effect of their digital footprint.
