Agreed, it's a bit daft. Although for them, I guess £20 in the account for an indeterminate length of time is always nice, and it should boost sales a bit at release.
To me it would make sense to pre-order it without a price if there was some sort of pre-order incentive, otherwise you're paying blindly just to be at the front of the queue in which case you're an epic fanboy...
I'll let you pre-order through me. Only £15 from my company, and you even get some magic beans.....
Tempted, but would be mad to preorder without seeing what the next Xbox looks like. Still, you could hedge your bets and just cancel for a refund if you change your mind- nothing lost.

Well as the article says, its not binding so you can always get your £20 back
Zero point in pre-ordering if you have no guarantee of when you'll get one. Going by what people on XDA developers have been saying about their HTC One pre-orders ASDA direct have awful customer service.
The way interest rates are going for current accounts you might as well put the 20 there as anywhere else
