Excellent news for those thin and light laptops etc.

Magic. That's my only explanation for how these things work.

I've always found it mind boggling how these things are made so thin but in there is a platter spinning >90 times a second within tiny tolerances. Clever engineering for sure, hard disks don't get enough credit.

the 24gb of NAND sounds great. if they could incorporate that amount of flash in a standard 9.5mm drive with 1tb of HDD storage as a super hybrid then you are talking. or likewise squish down so you can get more than 1tb in a 2.5" 9.5mm drive with the NAND

Noise levels are very impressive. Might have to swap out the big heavy noisy spinners in my system for these :)

I was thinking the same thing :)
Closely followed by "those would fit in a tablet".

Impressive engineering! Sound levels seem quiet enough, would need some benchmarks of the speeds though (Hexus review time? :D)
I'm especially interested in the WD Black, would be great to compare it to entry level SSDs and the older hybrid drive, the Momentus XT.

Those Ultrabooks are powered by Intel HD4000 graphics, that means that nobody do serious work like editing or something like that to need more than 240GB of SSD space. So why?
Re: News - WD introduces world’s first 5mm thick 2.5-inch drives
Now I wonder how fast the rpm these drives have...

Great to see that the floods that occurred haven't hindered their R&D progress!

same reason no one needs more than 640k of memory to run a program

Really impressive. Fair price as well.
SO tempting for my next build, do not need more than 500GB HD as I stuff most data on my NAS
