News - AMD G-Series X Jaguar based processors launch

The G-Series X is an x86 design, so could a G-Series A ARM SoC be around the corner?

I wonder if we will see these in embedded ITX motherboards to buy over the counter then

I agree with the above, an m-itx board would be great with these in, think a Server/NAS solution using mainly off the shelf components?

It would definately work like that, but I was thinking Media Centre

I was going to go with Richland but if these appear in m-ITX then they would probably do the job and be a lot easier to cool which means i can slip it in a smaller case.

Not a bad chip for a media centre, but you can get similar performance and much lower power usage from a pi, FullHD 1080p and 3D playback is smooth as silk on mine running XBian.

Nowhere near to similar performance. Now if you had said that a Raspberry Pi was up to that job that would be different thing but there's no way a ARM11 chip at 700MHz is going to perform at this kind of level.

It's sort of hard to get benchmarks for these things but 7-cpu do have some:
    Hisilicon SD5113 (ARM11) = 530MHz
    AMD E-350 (Zacate Bobcat)= 1600MHz (2 core)
    Samsung Exynos 5250 (Cortex-A15) = 1700MHz (2 core)
    __Compress speed: ARM11 = 113, E350 = 2080, A15 = 2450
    Decompress speed: ARM11 = 283, E350 = 2900, A15 = 3540
    (SOURCE: http://www.7-cpu.com)

Now the Jaguar core is a fair bit faster than Bobcat, so the above is only a rough indication.

EDIT: threw in the Cortex A15 scores in too. There are ARM cores which are a bit faster than the Raspberry Pi...

He was talking about media centres, and with those, if they work, they work. Not much more to it.

Yes sure. I just find the PI underpowered that's all. Plenty of Android dual / quad core ARM USB/HDMI devices which outperform it a lot and cost around the same.

Actually, those Exynos A15 scores are quite impressive for anything which doesn't need x86.

You may well be right, but at least the pi is widely supported - things like RaspBMC

Re: News - AMD G-Series X Jaguar based processors launch

Yup, I was talking about the Pi as a media centre, I use mine with XBian (XBMC based) connected to a 4 port USB hub and 4 2TB HDD's. It is also used as a NAS as well.
It plays all 1080p and 1080p3D videos smoothly.
The NAS side of it is a little slow, barely get over 5MB/s due to io bottle-necking but it's acceptable for storing music/video as those play directly from the NAS at full speed even then.
And the whole shabang uses no more than 14w with all four drives up to speed and accessing. gets as low as 3w at idle.

They should make FM2 compatible versions of these processors
