So that's what R2D2 looks like naked.
Cool looking case design, but that's about it. And one fan... really? That thing's going to have a nuclear meltdown. Plus there's almost no room for upgradability, which is kinda one of the points to getting a desktop. But then again that might be the whole reason for designing it that way, so you have to buy a whole new one from them later.
Is it me or the Macbook Air looks like an Ultrabook ?
Not at all convinced by the name 'Mavericks', but the design of the Mac Pro is absolutely stunning.
Not suggesting for a second I'd ever buy one (way too expensive, don't like the Apple 'ecosystem', no upgradability etc.) but I think they've done a superb job with the aesthetics. Now could someone please make a mini-itx PC case along the same lines??

A rather expensive one.
Anyone know what they weight is going to be? I mean 9 hour video playback isn't that impressive if its heavy. Even less is the 11", because when you read the page, they say only 8 hours if watching videos, considering that the Sony Pro 11 can get 7 hours doing that, whilst it weighs so much less than the current air, it will be interesting to see what the weight is. Also considering that you can get a 18 hour version of the Sony, it's not very impressive at all.

Anyone else thinks it looks like a trash can?

Looks rather nice.
However it does seem more like a new iteration of the G4 Cube. A corporate desktop computer/centrepiece offering bling, rather than an editor's workstation.
I do hope that they will add some extra ports to the front, for those who dare to banish it under the table.

Wow the first proper computer from Apple in years
11.6", 9 hours battery, 1.08kg
13.3", 12 hours battery, 1.35kg
No idea how that stacks up against the Sony one you're talking about.
/EDIT
That Sony laptop is pretty impressive actually... [if we're on about the same machine of course]
but"By using uni-direction carbon fibre throughout the case, the touch-enabled Vaio Pro 11 achieves the light weight of 0.870kg and the touch-enabled Vaio Pro 13 achieves a weight of only 1.060kg," boasts Sony.
Meanwhile on the battery front, the Vaio Pro 13 can manage up to 8 hours on a single charge, and the Vaio Pro 11 up to 11 hours. There is also an optional sheet battery that doubles stamina up to 18 hours on the Vaio Pro 13 and up to 25 hours on the Vaio Pro 11 - plenty to polish reports or watch movies on any long-haul flight.

your not comparing like with like.
If you check Apple, they list the time it will manage playing a video..... I can't think of a much simpler task. Not to mention the difference in resolution.
It will be interesting to see real world comparisons, rather than manufacturer mileage.

I did some more googling. I want to try that sony keyboard to find out if it useable!
So going on the 8 hour figure from Apples website for Video playback, we find that the sony gets 7 hours doing that, whilst weighing 0.87kg..... But add on $150..... It gets to a mass off 1.13kg. Or 50grams more than the Apple offering. That gives 18 hours, I mean wow.
Now putting my dislike for the macbook air keyboard asside, I think the sony could well be my next ultrabook. After being disappointed by the Surface Pro (loving the RT mind!) mostly due to battery life and 'meh' performance, this could well fill the tiny laptop void.
