Hopefully, DPC latency will be fixed, then the last reason for me to dual boot will be gone.

Adding windows image-based backup in would be a great bonus also...

Re: News - Download the Windows 8.1 public preview version today

The windows 7 style system-image backup is still present in win8, just tucked away. It seems to be called Windows 7 file backup, but it still created a system image on Monday for me That said, the backup size is significantly larger than Easeus for basically the same job.

Edit - that said, I still find it hard to find any love for Win8 (desktop user), and 8.1 doesn't really make any headway in dealing with the fact that Win8 made the desktop user's life more cumbersome/clunky than it needed to be.

Grabbing from Technet now, won't have time to muck around with it now next week, but I might just get time to build a couple of client VMs. Also SQL Server 2014.

It's like Christmas for me here.

"The update is not applicable to your computer"

Running Windows 8 just fine, is this something to do with the lack of English (UK) support?

Yes it clearly says if you're running an english version of win8 the language must be set to english(us),
it's not hard to change your base language over in order to install it, just note once it's installed you cant go back to uk settings at this time!

Also: it's time limited. Don't think I'd be upgrading my main machine (testing in a VM only for me at the moment)

"Note before you download: If you’re using an English version of Windows, you can only install Windows 8.1 Preview from the Windows Store if your OS base language is English (US)."
It says it underneath the download. Damn.

In some respects, I appreciate the small fixes here and there, but being tied into Bing and SkyDrive to use most of the new features... no thanks

There won't be XenApp 7... (XA 6.5 FP1 will be last release with most featured from XD7) and yts all under one product now - XenDesktop 7. Steamed apps are gone as well - Citrix decided to go with App-V packaged apps instead which is pretty interesting move to be honest!

Well, from what I've read, it doesn't even begin to address the issues I have with W8, so I won't bother with it.

I don't even use the new interface. I'm not really too excited about this update. I'm running Windows 8 with Start8 just fine. Last time I shut the PC down, uptime was at four weeks.

However, the return of the network map feature would be handy M$ guys...

MrBozack: you have no chance of the network map. w8 only plays nicely with a network if either you have windows server or everything is via skydrive. This is a design decision to eliminate as fast as possible all those workgroups. Just try storing all your media on a NAS and getting W8 apps to understand and play nicely with it. The cynic in me believe the design decision was motivated by the hope of selling a service to you!

This machine has coexisted on the home network. All the other machines are Windows 7. You just can't see the network, or Powerline Adapters on Windows 8!
It's really "special" trying to find IP sometimes! The network map is pretty much all I miss. Everything else in Windows 8 is spot-on imho.

I was looking at NAS recently, but soon realised I would probably need a real Windows server anyway.
(according to the significant other) Our house already looks like an office mixed with the PC section at Comet.
She's going to be well chuffed when she comes home and finds a rack mount!

It's strange; here in the 21st century.
