The problem with the latest Intel chips is there isn't really much of a reason to upgrade. I have a 2550k running at 4.5Ghz and there just isn't much need for anything faster for gaming or anything other than perhaps video encoding.

I guess it's another quarter for the competitors to get their 20nm processes producing goods so Intel aren't 4x ahead of 28nm products. AMD really need that ASAP, but they haven't even got 28nm high end CPUs on the market yet.

Of course games are getting more multithreaded and there are still plenty of people compiling code or encoding video, I'd like to see Intel bring their >4 core offerings down into the mainstream. Doing so would also help with the heat situation as more cores at a slightly lower speed/voltage means lower heat output per core, but same heat output overall as there are more cores and because there are more there's also a bigger die area producing heat.

You just can't bring out new sockets every few months!
i3 i5 i7 have seen Socket 1156, 1155, 1150, 2011 and God knows what's next.
Socket 775 saw P4, Pentium D, Core2Duo, Quad core.
You need to design one socket and build processors for that socket over the next 5 years.

I have a i7 2600 and it's wayy fast for me.

I have a 4670K, and it's much better than what I had before. I mostly need the horsepower for emulation (for which Haswell provided a major boost over Sandy and Ivy) and rendering.

AMD need to unify everything to the FM sockets, and level their processors better. Starting at quad now would be a good idea, as frankly there's little being made now that doesn't need the grunt. With games now wanting 8 cores/threads and at least 3GHz, I'm hoping to see FM2+ have some octo-core APUs.

When has Intel ever replaced a new range in less than a year anytime recently??

Even with optimistic schedules that would place Broadwell at June 2014,and its more likely to be Q3 2014 or later anyway going by the standard cadences Intel has kept to. With the drop in PC sales,OEMs will also want to shift unsold stock too.

The thing is by then TSMC will be at 20NM, and if the 28NM chips like the A7 are already competing very well against BT, using a specialised subset of the 22NM node(with Finfets),it will not a good situation at all for them.

I just get the impression,that for Intel to keep process node development going forward,we will start to see more and more expensive upper end chips,which means less cost amortisation in the segment Atom sells for. This would mean they could sell Atom cheaper.

Intel needs to keep high margins overall so they have enough funds to spend on node development as a whole.

The first links indicates they are reducing R and D expenditure and the second link indicates they are doing a lease-back agreement for one of their sites,and reducing headcount.

Well this next generation isn't supposed to come in a socket form, only for soldering into laptops. But given that, it is supposed to be pin compatible with current generation, so absolutely nothing will change on the laptops with this cpu either. Not very exciting stuff.

There have been rumours of 6 core FM2, which is probably enough for now.

LGA1150 <> LGA1155. I'm assuming your Pentium G is Sandy or Ivy Bridge since Haswell Pentiums were only just released in September. According to wikipedia the current list of LGA1150 Pentium G's is: G3430, G3420, G3420T, G3320TE, G3220, G3220T. If yours is LGA1155 you could only upgrade to i5-3570K and similar LGA1155 chips.

Yes, my CPU is LGA1155, but I will uprage my motherboard as well, and I hope Broadwell will be using LGA1150
