Pleased they have sorted this one out. They even put controller support back in which is awesome for Big Picture mode.
However I am a bit concerned over other titles that use the service like Bulletstorm, Gears of War, Batman AA, Dark Souls, Fable 3 and way to many others to list. I just hope you can still at least sign into GFWL offline and play these games.
There are basically 3 classes of game here.
Class 1: these games are being ported to SteamWorks (or at least being officially un-GFWL'd)
Class 2: these games require GFWL, but can be played with an "offline" (non-XBL) account, with features like Achievements unavailable
Class 3: these games require GFWL with server-side activation. These games will become paperweights in July 2014
In addition, downloading of any content from GFWL, including paid DLC, will go away in July 2014.
Games being officially ported:
- Bioshock 2
- Batman Arkham Asylum
- Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY (free upgrade from regular)
- Batman Arkham City
- Batman Arkham City GOTY (free upgrade from regular)
- DiRT 3
- Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
- Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (requires that you pay for the Ultra DLC)
- Toy Soldiers
Games not being ported, but you can probably work around it fine, at least for single player (multiplayer for these games may be gone forever, if they have it & use XBL matchmaking):
- Battlestations Pacific
- The Club
- Fallout 3
- FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage
- FUEL
- Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition
- Grand Theft Auto IV
- Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City
- Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights
- Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
- Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition
- Quantum of Solace
- Red Faction Guerrilla
- Resident Evil 5
- Star Wars: Clone Wars: Republic Heroes
- Stormrise
- Street Fighter IV
- Universe at War: Earth Assault
- Vancouver 2010
- Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II
- Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising
Paperweights (these games only work with an XBL account and do server-side authentication - as this server is being turned off you will be unable to play these games unless someone hacks the DRM out of them):
- Ace Combat: Assault Horizon - Enhanced Edition
- Age of Empires Online
- Blacklight: Tango Down
- Bulletstorm
- Colin McRae's DiRT 2
- Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition
- Dead Rising 2
- Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
- F1 2010
- F1 2011
- Fable III
- Iron Brigade
- Lost Planet 2
- Microsoft Flight
- Mortal Kombat Kollection
- Operation Flashpoint: Red River
- Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
- Section 8
- Section 8: Prejudice
- Street Fighter X Tekken
- Virtua Tennis 4
I think we can safely add Gears of War to either the second or third list there.
Its REALLY bad as I have about half of both second the third list
In a way this kind of sucks. You purchased the games and they are being ported for the most part but in limited used for some of the titles.
Hmm. Might play GTA IV again now.
Hmm, I wonder if any of directhex's "paperweights" are going to eventually appear, as there's a few of those that I wouldn't mind to see on PC (although I've already got on the XBox).
Considering the Bioshock2 special offer though - thought Bioshock Infinite that I got with my video card was pretty good. Only thing holding me back is possibly lack of disk space. ( )
GTAIV I wasn't that impressed with, thinking that the DLC's - Gay Tony & Lost/Dead were far better.
Good news about Bioshock 2 - fingers crossed Fallout 3 is ok like mentioned above, plus hopefully if I ever reinstall Batman Arkham Asylum it will work too. Annoying that Bulletstorm is lost though, I only just got it this year cheap, and played it a couple of months earlier. It wasn't amazing, but would have been handy for any replay in the distant future if I ever got bored. I've also lost F1 2011, which is a shame, but I haven't played that for a while anyway.
I hope dirt 2 gets ported over or sorted in some way, it's the only pc racer i still play.
Just had a quick blast of dirt 2 and had no problems.
well, They're only turning it off next July 1st, so I would hope not.
the ones i'm concerned about are DOWII and chaos rising. The single player campaign requires you to be logged in GFWL, so I hope they do do an offline version of GFWL that stores files locally just so you can play games in the years to come.
Hopefully Halo CE & 2 would come to steam too, always wanted those games as part of my game library, and with any luck Halo 3 as well ^^
doh! I guess I need to get a crack on completing DOW2's expansions (and achievements) before they disappear then.
It's annoying that a big selection of games are about to become completely unplayable you would have thought that Microsoft would have had something in place in the eventuality that they would want to retire the servers, but I guess in the face of the farce of the XB-One reveal it shows they never gave any thought to the customer's long term needs (which makes it all the more important that we needed the XB-One's on-line check-in revoked)
(I see Fuel's in the 2nd list, so I'd better start replaying that one too)

Just signed up here because of your lists.
They are seriously only patching the GOTY versions of Arkham Asylum and City? What a joke!
Also, do you know what's happening to Halo 2 and Gotham City Impostors?
I would assume Halo 2's campaign and LAN games will still be playable offline.
GCI... well the GFWL version was so laggy anyway, and they killed it off when they released the F2P version, so even if it doesn't have server-side authentication... what am I talking about? It's a MP-only game anyway so yes, it will be dead!
