That's correct. You need to add VAT to the US RRP of $799.

Never in a month of Sundays will this happen. Perhaps £699, but they wouldn't want something which would be seen to cross into iPad pricing.

Also, as everyone has said, it will probably be £699 for the base model.

Given that you can get a i5, 6gb RAM, 128GB SSD Toshiba which weighs so much less, and is thinner, for £740. Not sure it would be enough.

Also you need to add the 'screwing the non US customers' tax in addition to the UK's 'screwing its own inhabitants' tax. I'd be very surprised if it was for sale in the UK for less than £699. And even if it were for sale at £495... it's a mac so it'll be slow and crash a lot anyway.

It's a mac, hence the power management will actually work, it wont take a degree in archeology to update drivers and it wont come with 60 gig of pre-installed 30 day trial spyware.

TBH,even though I am not the biggest Apple fan in the world the MacBook Air is quite a nice laptop. I think a cheaper one will do quite well considering what you would use such a laptop for generally, and it will still be much faster than the earlier ones which were based on low voltage Core2 processors.

OTH,I am hoping the Trinity based ultrathin laptops have decent performance as these are meant to be cheaper than the Intel equivalents.

Interesting, the power management on two of my macbook pros in the past 3 years have failed, in one case completely bricking the battery.
Also, mac OS updates have caused system instability (ie hard resets required) on more than 2 occasions during this calendar year for me.

Just got my Mac Air. Lovely to use and more portable than my MBP. Anyone who never own a Mac, will always moaning about the over inflated prices. But if you know where to go and buy

Incidentally, the macbook pro in question died last night completely. It's already been back to Apple once for replacement RAM, HDD, Screen and SMC - all within a year of its life.

Stangely I can see a Macbook air with arm cpu at the cheaper price point, it's not like apple doesn't have control over the software side of things and their 64bit arm couldn be made quad core very easily.

That's interesting, because someone I know just returned his mac for this exact reason. Constant issues with the wireless card after being in standby. I witnessed it myself, although I could do little more than find other people having issues on the web, not being a mac person.
