Re: News - Steam’s concurrent user record breaches 7 million

However the long wait for next gen consoles and their recent arrival doesn’t seem to have impacted the popularity of the mainly PC-based Steam games service.

Steam’s popularity right now, as mentioned above, could be down to some attractive sales on big games titles
Hmm, judging by the comments here on Hexus, there's a good deal of disappointment with the "2013 gen" consoles - with a lot of comments along the lines of "I'll take my money and upgrade my PC instead". Which is what I've done.

Steam sales I think should carry a health (or should that be "wealth") warning - as long as you don't have to have the latest and greatest then there's some good deals to be had. Let's be honest - these days if you go for a title on launch day all you can guarantee is that you'll end up having to patch very shortly afterwards.

Funnily enough I was remarking to el missus at the weekend how easy Steam makes it. You buy the game via that system and all the updates etc are automatic. So if the SteamOS slaps OS upgrades in there too, then it's definitely going to be a nice environment - making Windows "umpteen updaters" look a bit stupid imho.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Re: News - Steam’s concurrent user record breaches 7 million

There's only ever a few games I buy full price, usually wait till stuff hits the tenner mark and then get it. Past few full price I have bought on day of release pre order were Dishonored and prior to that it was Borderlands 2. Played both for hours and I still fire Borderlands 2 up often.

I bought Castlevania Lords of Shadow on day of release but that was £20 so a fair price from the off on PC, next PC game I buy will be Deadly Premonition, listed as a tenner at the moment but with Christmas bearing down on us with the kids I am holding off till the Christmas sale on that one.

Bought Fez last night and been playing it a fair bit, its a fun little puzzle platform game and well worth the £1.74 price tag.

Re: News - Steam’s concurrent user record breaches 7 million

All the games listed as being popular are all the ones that have been in the sale so far (apart from dota 2, which i think is free?). I think valve introduced a new system or something regarding what to put on sale. Because the first day they were asking everyone to put the games they wanted on there wish list, they would then be emailed to say if it went on sale. I put a few on my list and they have all gone on sale although I have only bought £3 worth of DLC for my current games so far.

For me the prices have still been a little high.

Steam sales are great, I have enough games queued up now that I can wait 6-12 months before buying new releases so usually pick them up for 50/75% off.

Fez is the only title I've bought so far. Have 300+ now altogether, 90% unplayed :-(

I think the last couple of games that I bought at release was Civ V which I knew I would get my money's worth (Steam has recorded well over 100+ hours so far) and Sanctum 2 which wasn't that expensive anyway and I enjoyed the first one a lot. However, haven't really played that one as they changed the focus more on FPS than TD (or did, haven't checked recently on any of the patches).

Watched "Indie Game: The Movie" at the weekend about that; was quite interesting as it followed the developers of "Fez", "Braid" and "Super Meat Boy".

Regarding the sale, just got Tomb Raider for £6.

Re: News - Steam’s concurrent user record breaches 7 million

Still prefer PC but still prefer to get on CD/DVD where possible.

Steam keep the prices extremely high. The Steam sales in my opinion simply represent the price you should be paying all year for games that are well out of the lime light and no future development.

Re: News - Steam’s concurrent user record breaches 7 million

Steam is a great platform. Sales + Ease of use + Unlimited online storage & cloud gamesaves = Love.

I used to like consoles purely for the "pick up and play / co-op / driving" games, however the PC is catching up massively as it can now easily do anything a console can so now I have no regrets selling my xbox. Steam was the main driver for this, trying to streamline home pc gaming and making it easy for both the gamer and publisher to use.

Not to mention the games library will ALWAYS be backward comaptitble when new tech is released.

@Ferral. Fez kicked me in the balls then ko'd me within hours.... I'll happily admit I used a walthrough for the final 20/30% of the game purely so I could carry on enjoying it. And I did, deceptively its an incredibly well made puzzle platformer. and at £1.74 (ish)....bargain.
