News - BA allows use of mobile devices during take-off and landing

Passengers can use their 'flight mode' mobiles and tablets throughout the flight.

Excellent. No more having to turn off my Kindle and pass the time reading the BA Highlife and Business Life magazines during take off and landing.

I wouldn't have minded so much, but they don't change the magazines much, and frequently run out of FTs by the time prole class gets to board.

So finally I can read what I've brought!

I have always used my phone during takeoff and landing on Emirates, Qatar and Etihad in Flight mode and have even recorded takeoff and landing.

    What's new here ?

Indeed! Highlife is monthly and Business Life bi-monthly I think? There's only so many times I can reread the same magazine...

It's the ebook thing that annoys me the most. If I "turn off" my Kindle it's really no difference from sitting reading it, I always have wifi turned off anyway.

TBH it's been about a year since I was asked to turn off my kindle. Hell and that was only because I had a stewardess in a jump seat opposite me. Also I think she might more have been wanting to have a chat with me, than scold me for kindle usage.

The issue with using devices during takeoff/landing/taxing is those are the most dangerous parts of flying and people need to be paing attention in case things go wrong. Distracted passengers rapidly become casualties (or cause others to be)

More so than someone reading? Than the person with a bag at their feet? (only exit rows have to be clear).

The fact is that often people don't wear their belt or secure their children.

Good luck enforcing the "only" flight mode!

I hope they never allow calls whilst on a plane. Nothing worse than some loud berk on a mobile

    Bear with me on this...

What always annoyed me was that on some TV shows (recent) they had sections where people would fly off to somewhere, think Xfactor or some other rubbish where they go to judges houses. During those sections they would ALWAYS be filming as the plane took off & landed, so I'm not allowed to use even an mp3 player but a crew can use professional cameras to film out of the window? How did they get approval to do this?!

I really, really hope they don't either - it's often the only peace and quiet I get!

That said, some RyanAir flights do have equipment on some of their Dublin based aircraft that lets you make calls when airborne.

I believe that recording equipment would have been specifically tested and approved for use during take off and landing.

They already have, for the most part it's nothing compared to the noise of the engines.

Re: News - BA allows use of mobile devices during take-off and landing

It's always struck me as a totally dumb request anyway, I put my phone into flight-safe mode so I don't waste battery connecting to nothing but nobody checks I actually did or turned it properly off, so long as they screen is off and/or out of sight that's enough. There is no way to police it, any device left in a bag could be on and transmitting - I suppose the airlines have finally admitted the futility of the policy and just decided to save their staff a frustrating exercise.
