News - AMD Mantle boosts Battlefield 4 performance by 45 per cent

Also AMD demos 'FreeSync', a non-proprietary version of Nvidia's G-SYNC.

Re: News - AMD Mantle boosts Battlefield 4 performance by 45 per cent

Problem for anyone who is not called AMD is that MANTLE will also be used on console games too, it's as close as direct to metal communications can get I suspect, free from the hindrance of backwards compatibility and associated bloated API's required to do that, 45% performance increase is outstanding.

Impressive as it is, I am not convinced Freesync is all it's cracked up to be, if it could of been made workable with just software it would make no sense for a hardware solution and the manufacturers would not of spent all that money to include it in their monitor offerings.

+45% is HUGE. I was expecting a 25% on paper and a 10-15% in real life.

It says up to 45 per cent faster which could mean anything - e.g. max frame rate up 45% but min frame rate the same and average frame rate close to the same

Is this just on amd gpus? or does it scale on amd cpus as well? I can't see how it would since its already pretty well threaded, but I can hope

nope, not yet at least both MS and Sony have stated that there are not planning on using Mantle.

Re: News - AMD Mantle boosts Battlefield 4 performance by 45 per cent

I'd like to see some info on this that is not an AMD blurb of the claims of up to 45% performance increase. As mentioned above is this on the average, max or min frame rates, what resolutions etc.

Consoles tend to have direct access to hardware already that's why Mantle is being hyped for the PC as it's supposed to give you similar access to the resources that consoles have access to.

nope, not yet at least both MS and Sony have stated that there are not planning on using Mantle.
That's because they're already using their own proprietary console specific API's which give similar performance improvements and have done for years.

There's slightly more information given at AMD Mantle API is 45% Faster Than DirectX (wccftech). And there's definitely going to be better information out there (somewhere!).

Anything that gives better graphics performance for free is darned good news in my book - irrespective if the uplift is 4.5%, 45% or 450%. I'll take what I can get.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

I would be impressed if they did.
Nvidia has no reason to use the AMD API as they have had their own API for over 5 years (NVAPI was used in BF3), AMD is just playing catch up.
As for the claimed %45 performance increase i have my suspicions that maybe on low end hardware seeing as Mantel is derived from the API used on the consoles and compared to PC hardware they are fairly low spec.

Those slides are quite enlightening, as it seems they're only at pretty low end integrated graphics, where you're starting from a low base and memory bandwidth is very important.

I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt, but my suspicion is that it doesn't make a lot of difference on high end hardware, or they'd have made a much bigger deal of it. A 45% increase in 290X performance would put it nearly on a par with 780 SLI which they'd have been singing from the rooftops.

TBH,I have no problem with that!! A software move that decreases the entry level cost for PC gaming is good IMHO.

    Edit!!

It makes sense too. Intel is improving its IGP performance so AMD is trying to fight that too, especially as they are at a process node disadvantage too.

I'm going to sit on my hands for the moment I think.. I'm either going to go for Kaveri or an FX-6300 + R9 270 2GB, which will properly work about £100 more roughly though. Hopefully DDR3 prices will start to drop too!

Personally I would go with the FX6300. Bagnaj97 on these forums has a FX6300 and an HD7870LE and it seems fine with all the games he has run on it including Blizzard ones.

Re: News - AMD Mantle boosts Battlefield 4 performance by 45 per cent

I am very impressed with Mantle they have started out very well, so far there is 20 games in the development stage.
I have always had Nvidia cards and have started to get tired of paying so much for a card, I think the 7 series really highlights this point. To me its looking like AMD are becoming a very viable alternative for me with my next GPU upgrade.

I would be interested in hearing the opinions of other Nvidia users?
