That resolution is crazy, shames most tablets and almost all laptops.

Presumably it's supposed to be Galaxy S5 Zoom (penultimate paragraph in brackets)? The S4 Zoom has a 4.3" screen.

It might be heresy, but I don't see anything in those specs that'd have me rushing out to put down a preorder. Oh, and if those renders are accurate then it's not that pretty either. 5.25" screen - aren't we getting dangerously close to phone's becoming small phablets?

Think I'll stick with my S3 this year, unless Nokia bring out something that'd convince me to jump ship to Windows Phone.

We've been there a while IMHO. Most of the market doesn't really want a phone as much as a very portable internet device/computer. These are filling that role nicely. We brits are quite old fashioned wanting something that mimics the form factor of the old mobile phone

You're probably right about being there for a while, and the widespread desirability of a small 3G PC in your pocket. Although - personally speaking - if I wanted that, I'd go for a small tablet instead.

On the other hand these overly (?) large "phones" have a major drawback in that you look an utter prawn trying to use their unwieldy bulk. Was out and about yesterday and saw this smaller woman with her Galaxy Note (2?) and having to use two hands to hold it.

So what's the advice for someone who wants a phone for mainly texting and phone calls, with the occasional web foray? Presumably these "wierdos" need to be thinking in terms of low or mid-range phones.

To be quite honest, if all you want from a phone is mainly texting and phone calls, with the occasional web foray then there is no point in having a high-end phone because they're geared up to do so much more. A low end phone will do all of those comfortably and better than the high end smartphones of just a few years ago (think Win Mo 6.1), there is no need to spend big bucks on one.

will you be able to the physically see the difference between a 1440p vs 1080p display????

more importantly to me does the screen have a better grey scale compared to the S4 and S3 as the S3 is rather poor and the S4 is better but not great.

I wanna know the battery size, see if manufacturers are finally listening and trying to increase the battery time rather than add pixels we cant even see

Maybe look into the galaxy s4 minis etc for a smaller phone with decent functions and specs but a smaller size?

Really? Isn't that a bit too much for the resolution?
    The 3mp increase is nice.

Surely that resolution is a bit wasted? I would say 1080p on my HTC One is already overkill, and it seems more of a tickbox "We have the highest res phone" thing rather than an actual killer feature. Will be interesting to see what effect that it has on the battery life.

That said, if the screen is truly edge to edge that would be quite nice. Though I'm sure that the initial pics of the S4 had the same look. Anyway, we'll see.

That is exactly what its all about. Anything more than 720p on a screen smaller than 6" is just ridiculous in my books.

Its same as the Megapixel race for digital cameras, the higher number sells devices despite devices with much lower megapixel capability having much better quality. I just wish a little bit of this res-race would slip into the lower end of the PC/Laptop world so we can kill off 1366 x 768 once and for all.

A tiny little 11-12" A4 or A6 based AMD ultra portable with 1600 x 900 would do nicely.

Blame Apple then - remember that for a good few versions of iPhone and iPad it's been the Retina display that's been the PR headliner.

Like most here, while the high res screen is great for bragging rights, I'd be more worried about the negative effect on battery life that having to maintain all those pixels would have. Personally a 720p screen with good contrast that didn't wash out in direct sunlight would be a LOT higher up my list of priorities.

Looks like the replacement for my S3 won't be a Samsung device then.

I ever meet such problem before, after the high recommendation of one of my good friends, I got a spy camera detector at jammerall.com, everything is OK now. You can have a try!
