So? I don't really see how it matters. I know what you mean but there is no need to make it any more convoluted, not like they will run out of numbers. What they call it 'technically' can be as complicated as they like, for the consumer just stick with something straight forward.

No because generally on windows it doesn't work like that. 8.1 broke some minor stuff, so far 8.1.1 is not meant to, ms have been a bit careful ever since XP SP2 was such a problem, people didn't use SP3 and later. We will find out if there are even any new APIs soon, but honestly I doubt there will be anything really.

No interest to me. I haven't even downloaded 8.1 yet.
I don't want to run MUI apps and I don't need a power button either.

How do you cold start your machine then?

Although I've got an old Nokia 3320 like that, power button disappeared inside one day, so now if the battery is connected then the phone is on, if it's disconnected then it's off.

If all it is, is a 0.0.1 update then dont make a song and dance about it. It doesnt need to have the official title of 'Update 1', it can just be another one of those things that gets installed with windows updates that no-one really notices. As far as im concerned, it adds a significant new feature which changes the OS, pinning MUI apps to the taskbar, which is enough to warrent a 0.1 update

Sounds good to me. I never use the power options through the charms menu, I usually right click on the bottom left corner and then select from the 'Shut Down or Sign Out' menu as it's the easiest way to do the job for me.

I don't know if you are joking or not.

I have such a pet peeve in these things, non-programmers covering very complex software stories. I got banned from bit-tech for (amongst other things) calling one of the editors an ignorant moron who hadn't even read the release notes. They were doing a 'review' of preview version of Vista (which in its T&Cs speficially stated not to be used for such) as someone else who had an NDA'd version of it, I'd taken the time to read the release notes. They were talking about the installer not being different in Visa...... The installer that the release notes said something like "new PE install platform not ready yet, using the older one". It isn't even complex.

For instance the changes in WDM composition, specifically around multi-DPI was a significant change. The ability for MUI apps to support multiple size states, the changes in the async job model. These can be breaking changes for some code bases.

The problem is many people want to judge an OS by it's Shell. This really makes things hard to explain as far as differences go.

True enough, but speaking as someone that was a developer in pre-history (yes, I did COBOL, Fortran and others) but these days, I'm a user, I don't really care about programming issues or techniques. I care about what things do, how well they do it, and how they are to use.

I'm not, however, entirely illiterate about the mechanics of an OS, and WOULDN'T dispute the notion that a new version of an OS can have relaticely minor changes that are highly visible, or very major ones that, to the user, are next to invisible. An example wouldcbe the way Windows driver model has evolved, and how secure, or quick and easy to develop they are. But a use just installs a driver for hardware, and it works or doesn't.

I've never, personally, argued that Windows 8 is either better or worse as an OS, though my opinion would be 'better'. The shell design, however, has a direct, significant and in-yer-face effect on me every time I use it. It's hardly surprising that a large change in the presentation of it is going to be contentious. Nor, for that matter, that you can never please everybody. But for me, MUI, and the way MS sought to force it on us, is a game-changer, and enough to force me to re-evaluate using Windows at all, except where I have to.

HOw about the ability to change the colour of the metro tiles.

When I updated to w8.1 it decided that half the tiles should be in day-glo orange - clearly a colour scheme designed by a 4 year old.

How about the ability to have one background for metro screen (say a great photo that you have) and a different background for the desktop - currently you can either have the same background for both or your own background for desktop and an MS background for metro start.

Hmm? Tiles should be the same colour as your background? You can change this under settings.
