Will it be able to crack home-grown eBuyer and Scan's market or will it do a Humpty Dumpty?

I'd like to see this. I hope they come to Cardiff - my CV will be sent off straight away!
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Always happy to see more choice and competition on the market, but they will have to be good to prise me away from Scan.

slipthemonkey+1
Same here - Scan's customer service has never left me wanting. Coupled with their relatively competetive prices and fast/reliable delivery, they are always my first choice when buying. I currently use Amazon for all the bits I can't get from Scan and I may try Newegg for some of these. On the other hand, I already have Amazon Prime, so Newegg at price + delivery would be competing 'uphill'.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Nice, been wanting this for years :)
Scan has pulled questionable tactics on me a couple of times recently and I only really use them for small things now or when their price is way below others as they are too much of a risk IMO.
eBuyer and Dabs are ok but both their sites are badly laid-out.
Be nice to have another in the arena.....and the potential of a shake-up in pricing.

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
The more competition, the better.
I've started using Amazon a lot more now due to the lack of hassle in RMAing things. No worries about NFF as long as items are not physically damaged, they're very easy with returns - including unwanted goods. None of this "you were out by a day or two" with distance selling regulations, or partial refunds when things go wrong.
It's just really going to depend on the selection and customer service with NewEgg I think. Most people I know don't mind the extra couple of quid for items if those two come with it.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
hopefully they will have same stock options as they have in USA, scan is sorely lacking in any variety of brands, looking forward to this
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
More competition is always welcome. Hopefully they will have a store further South than Overclockers and Scan.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
I wonder if they are considering shipping to other parts of Europe or just the UK (for the time being). Cost is definitely a factor in this for me.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Newegg have a lot of goodwill from fighting patent trolls, so hopefully they will have a bit of recognition to start out with. In the end, as usual, it all comes down to price.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
I tend to buy from whoever works out cheapest / quickest, more competition is never a bad thing.

My feelings exactly - I've all-but stopped using Scan for precisely these reasons. My first choices are generally Ebuyer & Amazon, although with the latter I try to avoid marketplace traders. More competition is always good though :)

Agree with this - more options and competitive prices. Always a winner for buyers

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Always good to see a new competitor however they need to do a better job than BestBuy. That was so disappointing. I work round the corner from the second store they opened (Hedge End Southampton) and apart from day one deals it was overpriced -Heck even the closing down sale was poor! Cost of delivery will be key here I think...
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
As others say, the more competition the better :)
I think they will struggle to compete against the rest of the UK giants though unless they already have compelling contracts with suppliers and are willing to invest millions in advertising/promotions..which they may well do.
A combination of Low prices and US style customer service has served others well recently, fingers crossed it does something good for them :)
I presume they are staying online-only for their initial foray? I think Best Buy's attempt to crack the market was a failure in large part thanks to their heavy brick and mortar presence, which will have been very expensive..starting out online and building a UK brand before moving into that market sounds much more sensible.

Ha! OT I know, but I used to live in Soton (went to uni there), & remember the Hedge End retail park very well. The Sainsbury's is so big you could spend weeks walking around trying to find what you need!
It was a shame BestBuy failed, there are definite advantages to having a 'bricks & mortar' retail presence. If for nothing else, it gives you an actual person to shout at if their customer service is rubbish!

Newegg don't even need that goodwill for brand awareness, anyone who's ever spent any time browsing PC forums that have a large US presence will be aware of Newegg already.

Just took a look at the US site - taking a Synology DS413j NAS as an example - and it was easy to get misdirected. Although +1 for Newegg, at least there is plenty of information - and it seems accurate. E.g. Scan's DS413j page says that it's not iSCSI capable, which according to Synology it is.
So, I'll judge by results - hint Mr Newegg - some nice launch deals please! :D

Devon, Cornwall? That's a bit unfair comment - after all both the companies you quote are really eTailers who happen to have a physical presence (and I thought Scan's was relatively recent in the company history).
Think you've got problems ... try living in "Alex Salmond Land", best I can do is Maplin's or PC World. :( And it's only going to get worse if he becomes "President Salmond" (apologies for the politics)

Yep, I'll often check out the comments on newegg for a product I'm interested in even though I can't buy from them.

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Really liking the thought of Newegg coming to the UK, they are big in the US for the reason that's price & customer service... These two things are why I shop at Scan but a cheaper price I'll shop elsewhere !
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
I welcome the competition entirely. Having recently had problems with an order for the third time in a row (and a couple other times) with scan i hope it makes all the companies fight harder for customers

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
With a relatively large number of options here in the US, including direct competitor Tiger Direct with a live store presence less than an hour from my home, I still deal almost 100% exclusively with NewEgg - those rare occasions I don't are simply because I've gone to the local office superstore, due to my own negligence in foresight.
They always seem to have the best selection (which isn't always a good thing - there are some 'low end' options as well, often best avoided), the best online deals, and a lot of what I like to call 'sneak into your wallet deals' - stuff you have no immediate need of, but feel like a fool letting pass (SSD's at 1/2 off sales, etc).
And while I've been fortunate in never having received a DOA item from them, or even one that's failed inside of warranty, those occasions you do read of on their items indicate timely, if not downright fast, customer service turnaround.
I haven't dealt with a UK sellers before (no need, and no desire to fight with the taxes), so I cannot comment on your current fare - but I can honestly say NewEgg will be a good add to whatever mix you already have.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
I've had good service from Scan, some exceptional returns and their delivery is always spot on. Pricing, delivery and returns - those things will decide if I continue with Newegg EU past the first couple of test orders.

+ 1 to that. Considering there is very little profit margin in this market , I suspect NewEgg won't be any cheaper.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
I'm happy that NewEgg is finally coming to the UK, but like a lot of people here, I will probably still end up buying a lot of items from Scan for the fast delivery and customer service.
If it ends up outdoing Ebuyer though, I shall have no complaints :)

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Excellent news! Next, can we have Tigerdirect.
It will be even more awesome if we have rebates and discounts for sending old parts like in the US
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
What not to like.
Hopefully they will stock the same massive range as the USA and only accept Eu credit cards.

They may want Scottish customers though ;)

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Now this is awesome news. Amazon have it all there way at the moment, hence all the arrogance and treating its staff and sellers like trash. I for one will be supporting NewEgg all the way ... wish them all the success !
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
I've been a Newegg customer in the US since the mid to late 90s, and have not had a bad experience with them. I wish them success in the UK and hope they do well by the customers. Hopefully you. the customers, will benefit from the added competition and wider selection of goods.

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
More competition is good, but I feel it will just put more pressure on the current crop of British companies, which isn't good.

100% agree. Another massive American corp coming to destroy more home grown businesses no doubt.

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
not a fan .. but some deals overclockers have are bordering on crazy ..
will be great to see newegg hope they have the same returns policy as the states ..

I agree, but i have to say... some of these uk companies RMA service is bad&pretty much forces me to use Amazon with how much better the returns policy is. If the uk companies had a better returns service i would use them, but with reading so much from *various* companies my first port of call is Amazon.
Newegg could be good, but i have read recently that they too have been not great on either RMA's or *some* pricing.

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Do you reckon that they'll have similar/competitive prices to Scan as I'm wondering about buying a new PC from scan and I don't know whether to hold back and wait for Newegg to arrive

Why does it matter where the business is from if they are providing jobs in the UK?
Taking away nationalism for a second, it really means very little. We live in a world where huge amounts of business is on the global scale. Heck, most of the parts we buy are shipped from the east, often made by people in conditions that are a disgrace.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Companies like scan, aria, MD, maybe not OC anymore but they are all registered in huge uk, so the money isn't funnelled into offshore, which means it stays in the uk economy, even if it is just for one extra purchase. Better for the country overall I'd say.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
This is good news but not before time - let's hope it's been worth the [long] wait.
I've always been envious reading of Americans being able to buy their PC stuff considerably cheaper than we can, so it'll be interesting to see if those discounts make it to the UK, or whether the typical "$1=£1", which we're accustomed to in the UK, persists.

Last time I saw comment on this, the spokesdroid was saying that we've got import duties, business rates and sales tax (VAT) to account for on bricks 'n' mortar outfits. Plus the US is a bigger market so economies of scale/bulk buy discounts apply.
Then again, I know the US has state sales taxes, I assume some form of import duties and office tax - so surely that needs to be factored in. And as for the economies of scale argument - yes, there's a deal of truth to that, but then again I'd argue that we've got a higher overall population density, so you spend less in delivery charges, plus can serve the same number of people with less stores.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Looking forward for this. We will see more competition on the market, which is good because other stores will do some bargains or good deals more often than now.
-
Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Maybe they changed their mind or the rumors are wrong?
The only other thought is that newegg maybe your easter egg this year?

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
There is no info, apart 2 articles, one of them which is this one and its already April...

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Newegg are now shipping to the UK it seems. Goods are shipped from the good ole' USA and you pay duty/tax up front to them ...
Not sure if they still plan to have a UK chain with local distribution or if this is it??

Any idea how their UK prices compare with existing UK shippers, out of interest?

Re: News - Amazon rival Newegg expected to launch in the UK next month
Is newegg really an Amazon rival though? I man price and service wise.
