Why shut them down. Wouldn't have thought Sony weren't making money from them. Doesn't make sense unless there is an ulterior motive here.
If the Sony shops in the US price things in the same way as their UK stores, this isn't a major surprise. Whenever I have been to a Sony store in the UK they have been ludicrously expensive - basically pricing things at RRP or just below, which is a bit silly when they are right next door to richer sounds or john lewis, selling identical kit (usually TVs) for 10-20% less.
I don't think Sony has quite the same appeal as Apple or even Samsung when it comes to the "cool factor", which is a big reason that Apple in particular succeeds in retail - plus Sony kit is sold and marketed everywhere, whilst Apple still keep control of who can sell their stuff.
Still, its not particularly good news and I feel sorry for those that have lost their jobs as a result![]()
Going buy the reviews of there. Latest (URL=http://www.johnlewis.com/sony-bravia-kdl50w829-led-hd-1080p-3d-smart-tv-50-with-freeview-hd-2x-3d-glasses/p1169391?colour=Black&s_afcid=af_47868&awc=1203_1393581924_10e303002875b544dd43c92d5cc7dbe3) TV (/URL), Not everything they are doing isa bad thing.
They sold less than half the units PS2, the last massive seller in Japan, did; ditto the Wii. The console market's all but dead there.
While the stores look nice (seen one in London ON Canada) I can't imagine getting any good deals at one of these official stores and so I would not shop in it.
