Re: News - Crytek adopts AMD's Mantle API

Cryengine + Mantle = 20 to 30+ fps and no more bottlenecking on AMD rigs.

That's terrible. I hope they can do better than that. Where do you get that figure from?

Re: News - Crytek adopts AMD's Mantle API

AMD cards with mantle seem to be developing a pattern of only coming neck to neck with Nvidia's closest cards. It's all well and good having a superior API but the hardware at least needs to match the competition.

Anyways it's good to see another developer jump on board.

Mantle comes into it's own when using a weaker (than intel) AMD cpu/apu. So if you have an amd cpu you should get better performance with the equivalent amd gpu compared to the nvidia. If you're on an intel cpu mantle shouldn't disuade you from buying nvidia.

The way I see it is this:

Have AMD APU and use integrated graphics = free bonus performance in mantle games
Have amd cpu = buy AMD gpu if you play games that use mantle, if not buy either nvidia or amd
Have intel cpu = buy either nvidia or amd gpu

Mantle to me is a way of AMD trying to convince you that you should buy their cpus if you have their gpu and visa-versa.

Okay sorry I meant "10 to 15+fps" which I still have a doubt because of all the Cryengine games Crysis series is both a GPU & CPU intensive games still . Well waiting for a Mantle title from Crytek thats all.

And where do you get *that* figure from then?

Playing a game at 10 to 15 FPS isn't really on. I'm pretty sure the new Cryengine will have to manage better than that on modern gaming GPUs.

No I meant 10 to 15 plus frames per second boost for mantle.

it'd be fairer to say that Mantle comes into its own when the single-threaded performance of the DX drivers is the limiting factor. That's more evident on AMD [C/A]PUs than Intel because Intel have a significant andvantage in single threaded performance, but it's still the case that Mantle can provide some benefit to Intel CPU owners - particularly those lower down the range. I'd love to see some mantle figures from a lower power i3 or i5, particularly in well threaded games where they can't use their boost clocks as much. I suspect mantle would be a bigger improvement in those conditions...

where are all the sad Nvidia boys now, Mantle is here and next along will be HSA back by massive corporations not just AMD, no wonder Intel are churning out new processors every 4 month, panic panic panic. hope you have deep pockets for all them motherboards, processors and ddr4.

Except that Intel performance negates the cost of an AMD CPU because of their weak architecture. Don't get me wrong, AMD has great value and mobo compat but it's holding them back. Just because the AMD CPUs are cheap with 6 cores doesn't mean they can compete with 4 core Intel because of their weak core and architecture performance

AMD gain more with Mantle because their CPUs are weak, the A10 gains the most and no one serious with PC gaming would buy one.

Make your choice according to whichever you think is best. But the idea that AMD is cheaper isn't accurate. Look at the power draw of an AMD gaming system versus an Intel/NVidia one. You're saving a small amount today to pay a higher price over time.

Intel produce lots of chips because they're selling a lot. The customers aren't needing to replace their hardware constantly. I build a new system about once every five/six years, and might replace my card once during the life of each system or buy some new RAM or something. I don't see anyone panicking, and nor is there any reason to do so.

Re: News - Crytek adopts AMD's Mantle API

To be fair you, also have to factor in Intel socket changes so Sandybridge/Ivybridge to Haswell you need a new motherboard, Phenom to FX you don't.

Re: News - Crytek adopts AMD's Mantle API

Can we stop with the fanboying?

Mantle is kinda here, still not a single title I would want to play on my front room PC (where I play driving, 3rd person games and platformers)

in fact, by the time there are Mantle-enabled games I want to play on my 7970, we will probably start seeing DX12-enabled games....which could just kill mantle off.

Re: News - Crytek adopts AMD's Mantle API

Mantle is probably of most relevance to porting PS4 games to the PC now. If in a few years DX12 is established as the de facto API for XB1, Windows Desktop and Windows Phone then there's going to be little demand to port XB1 titles via mantle, however it's unlike Sony will get a look in on DX12, so will probably work to continue API improvements directly with AMD, and thus mantle might be cost effective for those PC ports.

Re: News - Crytek adopts AMD's Mantle API

Why would you port a PS4 game to PC?

The games are either going to be available on XB1 (and therefore will work on PC with minimal work) or it will be a PS4 exclusive.
