As for 4K, I don't care yet. I may be able to see a difference, but I don't care yet. It'll be nice to be able to scale UIs though.

I've seen 4k 32" monitors up close and they're just not that great. A 65" 4K TV is absolutely astounding and totally worth it but lower than that I just don't see the point.

Then again I've used a 30" 2560x1600 and thought it was a tad overkill.

It is TN, yes. There is a 24" IPS 4K panel, and a 31.5" IPS 4K panel, the 28" 4K panels are TN. Thing is, if it's £2000 for an IPS 31.5", and £500 for a TN 28", that's a pretty colossal price difference.

I'm intending to go TN, and move over to IPS once the price comes down.

It's not just the expense of the monitor for gaming, it is having the GPU horsepower to drive it. Although would probably never need AA!

Like Jim, I'm thinking that TN has the answers I'm looking for in a package at the moment. I won't be placing an order for this Samsung yet though, as I think it is likely that it will be a 6 bit TN panel, but I will wait until I see reviews of this and the new 27" Asus ROG monitor with a full 10 bit (or maybe it was 8 bit) TN before I make my mind up. My main usage will be for gaming and I don't think IPS is a good enough solution for a gaming oriented monitor.

There's already a review out somewhere with significant tests of the panel itself, the end results were that it's a good TN and worth more than you're paying, we're talking 8 bit plus FRC, viewing angles that're totally fine for normal use, contrast is a little low compared to displays costing £3k but there had to be a tradeoff somewhere.

Another display that might be worth mentioning is the AOC U2868PQU also up for preorder for £500, same panel, only real differences are: Proper stand with height, tilt, pivot, swivel, VESA mount, speakers, USB hub, inputs change to DP/HDMI/DVI/VGA instead of DP/2xHDMI.

*edit* just noticed Asus have joined in, but at a price tag of £600

All for higher resolutions in a single monitor, just don't like the additional horsepower cost to run this at 60 fps in the games I use. After all, why would I run this at 1080p and downscale?

but yeh there really is not much content for this unless you have RED camera to hand or have some serious GPU horsepower, in which case you're probably going to spend more than this on a monitor, so not sure who the target crowd is. That said you could play some older titles/lowish graphics settings to get a decent framerate.

It's not $600 though, it's $700. $700 = £420, and £420 + 20% VAT = £504
