The survey isnt particularly accurate, it rates the lowest speed on the fastest attainable in that street but the highest speed on the fastest paid for, not the fastest attainable.

Its feasible that every house in 1 street could have FTTH and all be on 300Mbps+ if it was paid for.

It also doesnt take into account how accurate the speed tests were and what conditions they were made under.

Were torrents running? were traffic management policies in effect? Were they tested cabled or wirelessly? Were the devices used free of all malware or spyware?

Does 30MB equal true 30mb/s or 30mb/s = real speed 3mb/s

In my area that survey/report is way off. I get 110Mb/s with BT (real speed 11mb/s) but according to that , the top speed is 30mb/s

MB= Megabyte, generally used by windows to denote transfer speeds
Mb= Megabit , generally used by isp's to denote bandwidth

8 bits to a byte, so an 80Mbps bandwidth roughly translates to 10MBps transfer rate.

Roughly stated, all isps advertise speed in bits, this has been the case since the internet has been around, but we measure the size of our files in bytes, whether MB, GB or even TB. A little conversion is needed to work out how long a file of a certain size takes to download on any certain bandwidth.

eg : an HD film can be around 4.8 GB, My internet connection is reported 120Mbps, if I was to download it at full speed, i would get approx 14.5MBps transfer rate

thats 14.5 MegaBytes of data every second. Roughly, so in a minute I get 60 x 14.5 which is 870MB, just more than a CD can hold. So after 6 minutes I would have downloaded the full movie.

I think it's time that ISPs paid more attention to upload bandwidth instead on just focusing on downloads.

My internet in general is bad, but upload speed with BT is just horrendous and means any kind of cloud-based backup options just aren't available to me, as well as more obvious stuff like uploading videos.

i used to get 0.2DL and about 0.1 UL until my area got upgraded now getting about 40DL and 30 UL :-) used to be incredibly slow, literally unusable

I get 2.5megs yes its crap B.T.are GREEDY B------s they take the government monies and do nothing, big Greedy corporates they don't care.

Hmm. Looks like most of my near neighbours are getting ~30Mb on BT infinity (fibre) yet I'm struggling to get 20Mb... Still better than the 4Mb they offered me with ADSL (and BT tried to claim it was 'similar speed to my last property where I got 14Mb!)
