When 4k becomes well supported and affordable I'll build a new PC around it, until then I have no reason to upgrade anything on this 5 year old machine.

Excavator, PCI-E 4.0 , DDR4 memory and a complete upgrade to the next level.
1) A low wattage system that's cheap enough to cost in two years the same as my old Dell P4 uses in electricity, yet more than just a replacement in performance. Not sure whether it'll happen more because computer prices come down or electricity prices go up.
2) An 8-core data ploughing partner for the i7-3930 workhorse.
Well, I only use laptops right now, so an "upgrade" will mean a completely PC. The next laptop will need to have at least as much storage (640GB) as my current laptop, but in SSD, and enough computing power (CPU/GPU) to handle everything madVR can throw at it, at under 3kg including battery. I feel like I may have to wait for a while to find a mid-end GPU powerful enough (high end GPU tend to be too heavier - I think).
I bought a new PC about a year ago, but without a graphic card. I used the one that i upgraded my previous pc with. So i'm waiting for the new generation of Gpus to retire my stil very capable 6850![]()
I can't believe nobody has mentioned HSA. I'm looking to upgrade my ****ty i5 540 to a 4670K but it would just be typical if AMD then released a competitive processor and HSA takes off!
Currently still using my i7 920's @ 4.5Ghz with 3Gb GTX580's which still seem to run most games I have fairly well..
Recently I have bought a 7990 and a 4770k system to replace both of my i7 920's. I will however be buying another system later in the year which will have the new 8 core CPU and be enough to game across 3 27/30" screens as I had with my i7 920 and 3 3Gb GTX580s...
I can't wait![]()
Obviously, i'm waiting for a new release of a CPU for my Socket7 system... I've heard that the new AMD K6-2 @ 300MHz will rock the computing world!
;-D
I do have some socket A computers here still and I do still use it too!!
I'm still upgrading occasionally, but there hasn't been anything which made me want to immediately buy a product since the Radeon 5000 (and that was because I'm interested in 3D development and that was the first DX11 family). I'm really not using my desktop PC much, so there's not much point of upgrading it (although I still do).
I'm waiting for a new passively cooled half height card for the HTPC which is significantly better than the Radeon 5550 I have now. An A8-7600 would be an interesting side-grade, its BIOS support for switching between 45W and 65W is pretty interesting, and performance-wise it's around the 5550. Unfortunately it's a CPU/MB/RAM upgrade.
For me the most exciting is the mobile space. Bay Trail made me buy a Windows tablet, and I might upgrade to a new one as the scene develops.
The AMD APUs are brilliant. I've had a few and with day to day usage as I use mine for a file server for storing my Steam/Origin games doing Web surfing etc on it uses next to nothing power and with an SSD and a decent cooler (not that it needs it) but it's quiet and quick.
I also have a E-350 which I use for playing blue rays and that's brilliant as well using no more than 22w to play it. I can't recommend them enough.
I think I'd consider possibly an Intel model but I don't know if I'd notice any difference.
Star Citizen (so software) is what will entice me to upgrade. The lower power envelope of Maxwell GPU is the area that I'll be looking at.
There isn't really any real game changing advances on the horizon are there?
I think the next 12 months will be quiet on the new tech front. Faster CPU's/ GPU's etc etc but nothing defining like SSD were.
Already ordered a 4K Monitor. But for the first time in 14 years or something, i'll skip the newest chipset, and wait for a DDR4 Ram Motherboard.
