I'm surprised it's only 2 titles.
The push towards indy studios and kickstarter projects meant this was bound to happen....You just got to take the rough with the smooth.

This happens on Google Play, iTunes, and Windows Store. Its only inevitable it happens on Steam. But at least they have been open about it and offered refunds which can only keep confidence levels higher than trying to say well you agreed to the terms of purchase.
This is also the problem with early access. You spend your money on an unfinished product, with no guarantee that you'll ever get a finished product.
My beef with the Towns devs is that (if the numbers are correct) they sold 200,000 copies at $15 each = $3m. Three frickin' million. How could that cover the rent!? They made their money and done a runner with it.

It is important to note that (from what I understand), Towns isn't an early access game.
IMO, with an early access product, you have to accept that you may get nothing out of it. You're paying to access it at its current stage, and I'm not convinced that anyone could reasonably expect a refund on the basis that it didn't get to where they expected it to be several months down the line. And even if you did, I doubt the account would be sitting in a company bank account to come back to you again.
The way I see it, you need to be very careful buying products over the web that are non-refundable. You need to do the research, read reviews, look at community responses etc. If you don't, then you're taking a bit of a plunge, and you've got to accept that you might be fleeced. I don't think that's necessarily right, but it's how things are.

Last time I played Towns, it felt fairly complete to me. The problem with it is at what stage is a sandbox game complete? Reading the Steam description, the game does everything it says there. No idea what was said on the forums, other than a load of people moaning that this and that should be added.
I think I experienced a bug once the entire time I played it. While you could argue there isn't a lot to the game, you could argue there isn't a lot to minecraft. People are limited by their imaginations. I enjoyed the 37 hours I've put into Towns so far, and while there could always be more to the game I'm glad I bought it. I didn't pay $15 for it though, it was on sale when I got it. Maybe people would have been happier if it'd been half the price.
While there are risks, I think it's worth noting that if you are careful these games can be some of the most innovative and best games to come out in a long time. Kerbal Space Program is a prime example of this! From what I've seen people doing a runner seems to be in the minority.
And thats why I will never buy a game that isn't up to the standard I would consider worth the money the only games that I have bought that was unfinished is minecraft and rust both of which I was happy with in the state they were in.Quote:

I would much rather they gave the games out free on the basis its an Alpha version which is pretty much what early access is and when the game comes to be released you have the option of buying it or the game being disabled.
In an ideal world, yes. But if you're a small dev, and don't have the money to enable you to keep paying the salaries for 2 years of free early access, then those funds are what keep you afloat.Quote:
