It's not a re-release of a current product. It's a new processor in the Haswell line up. Wooshing noises are because it's a hefty increase in speed and addresses a complaint people made - meeting user-demand is often a good thing

Whilst it will be nice further down the product stack for the small bumps in Mhz I fear Intel may just charge the difference. At the other end with the K products they are just righting a wrong they did to everyone, which may bay be commendable if it was for how long this fix has been coming.
Well if they are just charging the difference, while costing them more in terms of manufacture that's an incredibly good deal for us consumers. As for righting a wrong, Intel are the ones with the successful business and market share so it's unlikely they actually made the wrong call. There's no requirement for Intel to provide everything we can dream of having at a price of our choosing.

I think I've just become very pessimistic about ANY company advertisement
So don't listen to them - buy based on results

Yes, but all Intel promised is "improved TIM between the die and the IHS", they have not said anything about soldering. Regardless, if they offer an option that is close in performance to delidding the CPU while still maintaining the warranty it is a step forward in the right direction.
P.S. The whole Haswell refresh thing is also a very nice way of diverting the attention from the delayed 14nm process. Well done, Intel marketing department.

I don't know anyone who's been fooled by that, do you?

We all know 14nm is later than Intel might have hoped for, but sadly you just have to look over to the other team to see why Intel aren't all that fussed. The people who buy from Intel in the main probably don't need 14nm, just anything 'new' to pass on to their customers.

So... nearly 10 years after Intel canned the 4ghz pentium 4 prescott they finally reach 4ghz! Been a long time coming.

There have been one or two improvements in IPC in that time

In the consumer space maybe, but I'm sure there are plenty of businesses who'll be clamouring for 14nm server chips!

Intel has already gone past 4GHZ for some of its socket 1366 Xeon CPUs:

    http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2011/2...eon_X5698.html

They were dual cores based on the Core i7 chips, but were OEM only.

Probably, and yet I wonder how many of them are wasting power and performance by writing stuff in eg Java.

It will be a year until Qualcomm, the current second largest CPU maker, gets products made on 20nm in punter's hands. I don't see any reason for Intel to panic.

I don't see Qualcomm panicking that much either in mobile with Intel's contra-revenue with BT. This is despite Intel being a node ahead.

Plus after seeing what Apple can do on 28NM with their Cyclone design,it will be interesting to see what happens when more of the newer cores come out this year.

Not interested in the Devil's canyon i5 and i7s. More interested in the unlockable Pentium that is coming.
