Only when idiots assume the entire cost is the hardware BOM (which other estimates put a lot higher). Research, staff salaries, marketing, software etc are all free, nobody has to to pay for that at all... oh no wait they do, and also private companies are entitled to make a profit - if you don't want to pay the price then don't, simple. It's not as if Google would even be profiteering (which they probably aren't in reality) on some essential thing we needed, Glass falls very definitely into the luxury category...

Another concept to 'be charged' for is the fact that this is VERY MUCH a leading edge device. Point to it's competitor. The research to build this up from scratch itself would have been a HUGE expenditure on Google's part.

Also, Google are responsible for the Nexus brand of devices, so they are hardly out to profiteer.Not hugely anyways...

Best comment on this was online recently - poster said that the perception of being "overpriced" is because Glass is seen very much as a phone add-on or as a phone itself. In which case it's "unsustainable" for that to be more than the cost of a high-end phone, so about $900. And a phone cost has to cover overheads too. Not saying I necessarily agree with that ... before the Glass-fans start getting hot under the collar.

I'm not that bothered for Glass - $1500 for effectively being a beta-tester is far too high in my book. However, when it's "productionised" (and a shedload cheaper!) I think it might be useful - especially as I already wear spectacles, so it's not a big hindrance. More of a problem is that you look like something out of a bad sci-fi movie. Or, better still, you get comments of "oi mate, where'd you leave your 'elicopter" since it looks like the something the Apache pilots would wear.

I really like Glass, but the route I'd probably go is get an Android Wear smart-watch and see how much of the craving that satisfies. I'd feel a lot more comfortable if they guaranteed something like the first and maybe second generation of production/consumer-grade glass free for anybody buying at this stage as thanks for helping them bring it to market.
