Since 8.1 was a free upgrade for windows 8 users i do not see why we cannot download an 8.1 iso to do a fresh install but no because apparently they are different products and windows 8 users have to install 8 then download around 7gb wait hours just to get 8.1 and the more updates. it annoys me that you can install windows 8 and 8.1 in around 20 minutes then you have to wait hours to do the updates. why cannot Microsoft provide updated install media?

Well, I can give you a cynical reason.

MS have made a number of moves in the same direction as Adobe did with Creative Suite, which is to move from 'product' to service. Doing it this way is consistent with getting people into an 'always connected, constantly updated' mindset. Next, will be us not "buying" Windows, but paying a subscription for it every month. And, personally .... nuts to that!!!
