Darn...I just bought an FX 8320 last month. Still, nice to see prices dropping.
'AMD says the FX 9590's greater multi-core ability will give it a clear and obvious lead for power users'
Unless you care about your electricity bill.
I was looking at building a FX6300+R9 270/280 system earlier in the year, but decided to stick with my laptop until Excavator/Skylake comes out next year, when a few PC games like Star Citizen will be out.
They do need to a damn sight more than drop the price to get me to consider using them anytime soon.
Lack of good looking motherboards really. MSI's gaming series boards with M.2 and Sata Express look really appealing at the moment.
I think the price drop makes the FX chips very competative. Well worth it if you're already running an AM3 board. But if not, buying into a dead end chipset with a chip that consumes tonnes of power doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Other than wanting to support Amd more than Intel! I hope this gives them a boost in sales so that we can see a real top end Cpu competitor from them, on a new chipset of course :)
Must say, even as an AMD fan i'd never buy one of these chips (Intel's history of anticompetitive behaviour has permanently put me off them).
The 125W rating of my current 8120 CPU is a bit excessive, 220W just takes it into silly places... :)
What 3 new 8 series FX CPU's are they talking about? only ones i knew was the new FX-8300 and a Athlon 860K for FM2 socket.
Damn, just got a FX8350.
Ok, I got it at £119 :)
It's be a decent deal if not for the fact that AMD cpu's are so badly supported with many games it makes them pointless to get as a gamer.
Don't think there's a single MMO out there that AMD even gets half the FPS that an Intel CPU get, it's so bad.
^^What? CPU support in games? Do you mean multi-threaded support, or simply the lower performance per core of AMD CPUs, because I'd love to see evidence that no AMD CPU can get half of 'an Intel' CPU based system's FPS in an MMO.
As someone who sometimes plays WoW with an FX8350, I have to say that is nonsense.
My son plays with a 955BE, that is noticeably not as good as an Intel or FX platform which is probably where your comment is coming from.
Decent benchmarks are hard to find. Here is one from when the 8350 came out:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...w,3328-15.html
So the state of play then was that the 8350 got you about 80% of the performance of an i7 for a lot less money. And now the 8350 is just £3.50 more than an i3 4370.
I have to agree with this. I run two rigs, my main rig and the one that my nephew use are almost identical, the key difference being my main rig has an i7 3770k and the other has an FX8350. In terms of gaming performance I can honestly say that the frame rate and game performance differences between them are not that big, and definitely no way near the AMD getting half the frame rates of the Intel, I would say the differences at 1080p are typically less than 10% and more often than not less than 5% apart.
I hope this price move stimulates some additional sales for AMD, I'd like to see them have a reason to develop some new high performance desktop SKUs.
I want to buy an FX 8350. Is it going down in price also?
I don't play MMO's, it's mainly FPS's for me and - on that basis - I'd say you've definitely got the wrong end of the stick. On a fps/£ basis the AMD chips do okay. Heck, I've got a donkey's old PhenomII and I'm getting pretty reasonable 1080p bench figures. If you're getting "half the FPS that an Intel CPU get[s]" then that AMD box is setup (badly) wrong. And I've yet to come across a game that won't work with my 100% AMD setup.
Come in Cat-the-Fifth... ;)
The 9590 looks like a good chip, but as you say, 220W TDP is a bit too much on the "dark side of the sun" for me. Although, in AMD's favour, it IS heading towards autumn/winter time so the folks using these chips in their builds are going to be nice and cosy. ;)
They just dont compete with Intel unfortunately and while a price drop is nice I switched to intel and as much as it loathes me to say it I doubt I will be going back any time soon.
I love AMD and have bought AMD for years but the current crop of cpus just doesnt cut it when you compare them to intel which is a huge shame.
I started using AMD for gaming in 1991. They were the first ones to offer special features for gamers. Over the years I haven't been disappointed in their products. Now my 2 year old gaming machine is a low budget ECS A55F-M3 motherboard, Athlon II X4 631 CPU, G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 and a MSI GTX460 Hawk video card w/1gb. While researching for an upgrade I read where AMD isn't changing to DD$ until 2016. DDR4 is already coming on the market it seems that to continue with a new AMD setup isn't really moving forward. I don't look foward to the nightmare of changing to Intel, bit it seems the only path there is for the next year. AMD Putting their chips on sale isn't really doing us any favors! Might be the only way to sell their stuff for a while.
I hope that AMD releases a new FX generation at some point (and keeps it AM3+ compatible). That said, since I'm not using my desktop at all these days, it doesn't really matter.
People saying they won't consider using them, I highly doubt AMD are aiming at you anyway, an Intel person is an Intel person, AMD don't really attempt to take such people off Intel.
AMD sits as the alternative to Intel for pricing and performance so the price drop would make sense. I was about to get the FX8350 (the others are too hot!) so will wait a little longer.
I hope AMD do well as they try their new strategic moves.
You might find that this price drop is the pre-cursor to a new release which, at a possible new process node from GlobalFoundries, might be exceptionally fast in comparison using similar technology if not merging their technology with Intel's HyperThreading in a cross licensing deal.
I find that I like AMD the more I hear about what they are doing and how they are doing it- Intel on the other hand, not so much.
I've got an amd 8350 it sits at 5ghz ok water cooled .. but play a lot of fps and really can't see the difference between an intel ..
but wow are they cheap now bought mine when they first came out .. with good mem in real life your not far behind intel
even better if you hook up a r290 :)
Where did you read this? Got a link? I can't remember exactly what I last read on this. But I thought we were having to wait until late 2015, maybe 2016 for the next high end desktop Cpu's from Amd. I'm also surprised they would relesease them on Am3. But whatever the situation is, I'm really interested in reading about it! I'm completely holding off building another desktop computer until Amd have something I want to buy! Thanks.
Seems I was wrong, cannot find the exact article I read but according to this: http://wccftech.com/amd-readies-steamroller-based-a47300-athlon-x4-860k-840-athlon-x2-450-fx8370-am3processors-q3-2014/ the Athlon X4 860K is for FM2+ whereas I remember reading it was for AM3+.
Too bad, Steamroller could have actually been a nice way to see the AM3+ platform go. Nothing ground breaking, but at least it would give it reason to exist until the next big core from AMD comes out in 2015/2016.
As for holding off, I'm on the same ship. Firmly waiting with my X4 960T until either DX12 and Mantle gives it a new life or AMD finally ships something worth buying.
Thanks for the link :) Yeh those ones don't look too exciting. Unless I underestimated them! I'll keep an eye out for benchmarks though just to see!
Well that's kinda obvious :P I already did that when there was nothing significantly better than my 955 available back in 2012. But this time round, I'm holding out for Amd. I'll just get a Ps4 to play about with until then :) But this is really the problem with Amd. I wonder how many they've lost to Intel by not keeping up. I wish somehow they were able to put up a better fight!
double post
Any sign of what the new chips are or when the prics are likely to pass through to channel? The usual suspects still seem to have 9590 in the £220+ range
OCUK dropped their prices over a week ago and has the 9370 on pre-order. Scan has dropped some prices plus they have the 9370 listed as well. Amazon has some good prices at the moment with the 8350 at £116.99 plus they seem to have applied the price drop to their own stock. I buy a lot of computer components from them now as they are usually cheaper than elsewhere, have free delivery and should anything go wrong their customer service is good.
Even at £175 I think the 9590 is still not worth it. Better to get the 8320 or even the 8350 at Amazons price and overclock it.
AMD FX 8350 has just gone up to £125.99 on Amazon. I was just about to buy one too :(
I put the FX 8350 through Flubit and they\'ve given me an offer of £109.41. It says a saving of £7.58. This is a good enough price for me
