One more reason to keep a backup image...

You don't need a image, all you need to do is uninstall it via Programs and Features. I have this update on both pc's and have had no problems though.

If you have the problem I presume you can't get to Programs and Features (whatever that is!) You need to go to the recovery console and fiddle the registry. Or if you have an image just boot to that and don't apply the update.

Been having bluescreens every day since the beginning of last week but havent had time to diagnose and it didnt seem like a hardware problem so hopefully its this... uninstalling now :P
Re: News - Microsoft: uninstall the August Update MS14-045 security patch
If you're in a reboot loop like the article mentions, and can't get into the OS, an image makes for a quick(ish) solution. If you can get to the workaround (I did see mention of SafeMode in the support page, so that would hopefully cover most people), then of course that would be quicker. Either way, backups are a very good thing. Just knowing that these sort of errors are possible makes me glad I have backups.

Programs and Features is where you can uninstall programs, unwanted Windows features and updates via the control panel. In Win 7 it's:- Start>Control Panel>Programs and Features. For updates click on the View Updates tab.
Re: News - Microsoft: uninstall the August Update MS14-045 security patch
You can access programs & features via safe mode and if Safe mode is affected by the update, system restore will have a restore point before the update. Provided you have it turned on of course. One good thing for System restore, rolling back behind bodged updates.

Ah cool - I've not had to play with safe mode so far. Odd that it has a different name there than in normal mode (which is just called "Uninstall a program").
Re: News - Microsoft: uninstall the August Update MS14-045 security patch
Indeed happened when I patched my dads Windows 7 machine but was ok on my Win 8.

That's weird. It's called Program and Features in normal mode for me and I have the same version of 7 as you if your system list is up to date. Anyway, uninstalled it from both pc's now just in case.

How bizzare! Yes on my comp if I go to control panel it's listed as 'Uninstall a program' directly on the control panel. Once I'm there I can see the breadcrumb bar lists Control Panel > programs > programs and features, but I've never seen it called that.

When in the Control Panel just change the view (top right) from "Category" to "Small/Large Icons".
It's one of the first things I do when I install Windows.
Re: News - Microsoft: uninstall the August Update MS14-045 security patch
It depends on which view you use - regular view shows as Kalniel sees, if you have it in any other view (change by selecting View By and changing it to something else) it shows as Programs and Features.
EDIT: seems I took rather too long before posting my reply :)

That's what I always do too. That explains things.
