Priced at $249, it aims to make the competition "green with envy".

Seems like a retrogade step IMHO... not exactly exciting stuff.

well its seems to me to be more of a reaction to maxwells frugal power usage at least on the 750 card. A good 60 watts drop is nothing to write off for roughly the same performance.
IMHO both companies are a bit stymied until 20nm comes on line.

But just think, if they can manage that much better watts per shader on a mid range part, then how many shaders can they cram on a high end part for the same consumption as before?

That's what the 290/x is isn't it?

Doesn't look like it when you look at the 290/x power consumption. It's more like a scaled 7970.

Possibly, though there are rumours that 285 might be a new evolution of GCN.

Except it's not GCN1.0, and uses their new memory controller architecture presumably like the 285. Infact, it's nothing like the 7970 ;)
Unfortunately you can't just ramp up one aspect and hope performance scales - to have more shaders you need more supporting front end and mem bandwith, just like the 290/X do.

Lets hope so, but it looks like it might be 1.1, same as 290, 260 etc.

I'm sorry that I'm one of those people but this is really bugging me.
claiming the R9 185 is*"up to 15% faster".
Should be R9 285
