I like the weird design, looks interesting. Would be interested to find out how well it manages to cool things in comparison to the cases we normally build in.
I was going to try and mod an old Dell case but have decided against it, I don't have time to unpick the design choices they made, they seem to work well enough so I'll leave the machine as it was. Maybe next summer...

I wish more of these 'interesting' case designs were available to purchase as separate cases for system builders (I do understand that some of them are not compatible with off-the-shelf MBs etc.). Other than the (isotope?) series from Scan, almost all the cases I could find were variations on a standard box with 'bits/flaps/fins stuck on'? Ended up getting a Corsair 600T (in white) which looks smart, but something a little more interesting would have been nice.

That's a very strange design, but if Alienware proves it to work well with cooling and expansion, then thumbs up for them.

I thought they stopped the Area 51 branding, even though it isn't cheap, it is nice to know it is still there.

Glad to see manufacturers other than Apple trying to redefine the enclosure, be interesting to see how well it functions.

..Promotional video. Doesn't use lovely sleeved cables. Poor effort really. :P

Take the price of everything included, double it, then add another 25% = retail price for Alienware.
Re: News - Alienware Area-51 PC gets Haswell-E and a 'triad' redesign
Research & Development costs money mate; you can't create awesome things without failure, lots of time and manpower to overcome the problems that come up; all that needs to be incorporated into the price. If you want to design your own case then go for it, don't expect interesting designs like this without paying a premium for the R&D required to make it though, that is unrealistic.
A side note to remember, Alienware computers come with "One year Next Day In-Home Service", something you can't get if you build it yourself and would need to pay for shipping back to a retailer and do your own testing to find out which part is not working when something goes wrong. I know how valuable that time is because I run a computer for every family member in the UK: 3 laptops, 4 desktops and a bunch of mobile devices. I have spent the last 2 weeks working on them to get them upgraded for a fraction of the cost of buying something new. I save them money by doing all the labour for free but if you don't have the time, or knowledge, to do that then it is well worth spending the extra to get that kind of service from a computer company.
Building your own computer saves you money and if you enjoy it is not time wasted, but some people value their time more than their money and I can't disagree with that.
