I've seen one of these infotainment systems in a demonstration at a Texas Instruments product presentation. It is very interesting how these systems are able to run smooth and still keep up with critical functions in the vehicle. Talking with the representative of TI that was in charge of this subject he explained that for the system to have 0 interference in the vehicle the Android is run as a virtual machine in the actual OS of the infotainment system, which is rather interesting.

I don't think the old version of Android is an issue - over the lifetime of a car it will be out of date in no time regardless. Much better to have one very well tested, stable version that runs flawlessly and leave it at that I think.

    It's a car, not a flippin' spaceship!!
You could get most of that functionality just by blu-tacking a tablet onto the dash anyway and likely for half the price!!

I think it's going to be standard across the Civic range...

When it's been scientifically proven that using a mobile phone reduces driving efficiency and safety and that just talking using a hands-free kit also impairs your abilities whilst driving the last thing we should be advocating is "infotainment" systems that only serve to distract drivers more.

From a tech point, great its interesting.... from a road safety aspect its not so good.

Pretty much my opinion too - especially when the article mentioned being able to use pinch and zoom gestures!

A lot of the newer Civics I see around here are the warm/hot S and R models, so lord only knows what the baseball-cap-wearing drivers of these are going to make of having all this tech on board.

Android 4.0.4? Wonder how long it'll be before someone on XDA does an alternate ROM?

Then again, I don't even want a fitted satnav in my next car, so maybe I'm just turning luddite in my old age...

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

I use my Nexus 7 in my car for satnav & music, just clips on below my radio so just take it with me when I've finished driving.

I've personally found it to be a great for me, though I'll only mess with it when I'm stopped (apart from skip tracks), I can change music tracks by double tapping the volume up so I don't have to take my eye's off the road.

Also handy if I have my son or bored passengers as I can pass it to them to play with for a bit and just use my radio as normal.

I can understand the safety concerns though, trying to mess with maps or anything else that requries looking at the screen while driving could/would cause serious accidents.

From the image above it looks like it has 3G and wifi which is nice and I don't see it running an older version of android an issue as it's not like you'll be loading it up with apps or games.

Nvidia says the 2015 Audi TTS Roadster employs an "Nvidia powered virtual cockpit."
It looks a bit better than Honda's effort...

Here's a video view of it.

Engine management light was on in that Audi video - you would have thought they would have fixed it! And also the rev counter didn't seem to be working for the early part of the video....

Although I can understand that whatever version of Android doesn't matter in the long run, it will be almost 4 years old by the time these cars are in the wild...

Just what we need another device in a vehicle to distract drivers.
