Well at least that means there *will* be more price cuts coming at some point - when AMD finally gets their collective head out of the sand (AMD user here btw)...

As a longtime fan of AMD Radeon graphics card, mainly for their price/performance ratio, i'm kind of amazed that Nvidia is doing what they're doing with their current prices on their flagship cards. AMD is going to have to drop not only faster cards with the 3xx series, but they're going to have to have competitive prices. Either way, now is good time to buy a graphics card, whether or not you're going AMD or Nvidia.

Hopefully, what AMD and Nvidia will do is constantly leapfrog each other, that way users won't be faced with performance on the same ballpark from both brands but rather have relatively small time gaps between card releases that have palpable performance improvements over each other.

Tbh I have 2 Powercolor PCS+OC R9 290's that outperform the best 980's while still costing less, neither of Nvidia's offerings interest me(970 and 980) They are too late to the 4GB game and still depend on an SLI bridge instead of doing it through the PCI-E and then there's the other weakness they are totally dependent on Microsoft getting their thumb out of their ass and making DX12 work whereas Mantle is tried and tested, constantly improving while gaining wider adoption. If they want to interest me they need to stop charging £500+ for their top tier Ti cards.

Think it's going to be another 8-12 months before I get a new card.
My 660ti FTW+ 3gb is a bit sluggish at 2560x1080 but not enough for me to splash on the new offerings at the current price.

Nvidia and maxwell are wiping the floor with AMD, AMD need the 290 below 200 and the 290x below 250 even then they are still a hard sell with the awesome 970 for competition.

Re: News - AMD not cutting the price of Radeon R9 290 and R9 290X GPUs

I just upgraded to a gtx 970, the two main things I was looking for when upgrading were a good performance boost over my old 5870 and lower power consumption. If AMD's next round of cards can get a grip on the power they use and also beat my new 970 then I'll happily go back to an AMD card.

Uh. How much did you get your 2 290's? Because I'm seeing them go for £300 each on overclockers.co.uk (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-166-PC) meanwhile one 980 goes for £300 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-147-GI).

AMD needs a better response than dropping prices. I am on the lookout for a card for £250. The Geforce GTX 970 fits my bill perfectly.

Re: News - AMD not cutting the price of Radeon R9 290 and R9 290X GPUs

Ebuyer have the Powercolor R9 290 for £220 plus a game bundle worth around £25 at least after Ebay fees. Plus Gibbo on OcUK said they are looking at getting some decent pricing on the R9 290(possibly some £200 deals).

However people need to consider that the GTX780TI,R9 290X,GTX780 and R9 290 even in pre-overclocked versions usually consume less power than reference HD6970,GTX570 and GTX580 cards.

Agreed. I game at a lower resolution than you with a pre-overclocked GTX660,and even with the GTX970 release and cheaper R9 290 cards,I am would still need to pay close to double what I paid last year to double performance.

In the last year, slightly pre-overclocked GTX780 and R9 290 cards have been available for between £250 to £300 already.

In terms of performance, there is another 10% bump in performance and a 50W to 70W improvement over the R9 290 cards, and less over the GTX780 which consumed less power, with the GTX970.

I think until 20NM is along sometime next year, its going to be more of the "lower power consumption" or "we have this feature" or "game bundle" marketing from both companies. But OFC whether the performance bump is going to be big is another thing.

Why would we talk about a 4 year old graphics card that was on par with the HD 6970 which came after it and still came away quieter?

Kind of pointless to compare 2010 tech to 2014 tech, don't you think?

The sad thing is, all these monster cards are doing is allowing the game developers to get more and more sloppy with their programming. I'm especially looking at games powered by IdTech5... at least Crysis and Crytek had a purpose - to push the entire computer to its limits. The new Wolfenstein didn't challenge a Core2Duo machine, as long as it had one of these jet powered video cards.

Re: News - AMD not cutting the price of Radeon R9 290 and R9 290X GPUs

While the power consumption of the 9XX cards is VERY impressive for 28nm, are people really predicting the death of AMD based on a 5 - 10% performance improvement (if that)?

Is there something I am missing about these cards? It's not like they are really cheap either. This is an iterative release at best, there is nothing performance wise a 980 can do that a 780Ti or 290X couldn't do several months earlier.

I don't recall people predicting the end of NV when AMD were selling crate loads of cards for the mining craze, sometimes NV are on top, sometimes AMD are on top. Remember the Geforce FX vs Radeon 9700? the HD2900 vs Geforce 8800GTX? Neither of these difficult series particularly hurt their respective companies, and I don't see AMD suffering too much now. People have very short memories and only think of the last few generations when we had relative parity.
