Re: Features - QOTW: Which laptop do you use?

Dell Precision M6600 which doesn't really move from my desk and is perfect with it's 17" and AMD FirePro graphics.

Have a current generation Core i7 Dell XPS 12 for when on the move.

Both Dells do exactly what they are meant to and never let me down. Added a mSATA SSD to the M6600 last year and that has really helped it fly. I sort of feel we've got to the point where except for gaming, any laptop from the last few years is pretty much going to be able to keep up with Office, browsing, some video/photo editing etc. Previously I'd be itching for a new machine after about a year, now I'm thinking about extending my Precision's warranty from 3 to 5 years as I don't see the need to replace it.

Re: Features - QOTW: Which laptop do you use?

    Lenovo X121e (AMD E-450 version)

Absolutely love it to bits. Not the fastest laptop in the world, but it's durable, small and light (11"), has decent battery life and the APU is surprisingly decent for light gaming duties. Perfect little laptop that you can just lob in any little rucksack and take with you anywhere.

Out of the box it had 4gb ram and a 320gb hdd to go with it's 1.65ghz dual-core APU, now upgraded to 8GB and a 128GB SSD.
With a bit of fiddling with utilities to undervolt* the APU and manage** the fan, it's mostly passively cooled and therefore utterly silent unless under heavy load too.

Only thing i wish i could change is the screen resolution: 1366x768 is far too low, embarrassing when i consider my smartphone has a higher res screen

I had a 11" AMD lenovo before this one (x100e) and i'm 99% sure my next one will be an AMD 11" lenovo too...

    Clevo W350SSQ (i5-4210, 12Gb, GTX860M, 128Gb SSD, 2x1Tb HDD, no ODD)
I'm loving this - it was a replacement for my old Sandy Bridge HP Pavillion after the screen failed and proved unrepairable.

The Clevo is easily powerful enough for my general computing needs and has decent battery life on the integral Intel HD4600, while the GTX860M has handled every game I've thrown at it so far.

Dell Latitude E7440 Ultrabook - i5 4300U, 4GB, 128GB SSD, 14" 1080p IPS, Wireless AC and Mobile Broadband. Bought a month ago for £540 as a refurb from Dell outlet.

    Because I was specifically after:
    - 'Proper' docking station support
    - Removable battery
    - 1080p IPS display
    - 3 years NBD service

Generally a positive experience so far but admittedly a bit disappointed coming from other Latitudes, 7/10
+ Works with my existing E-series dock!
    + Screen brightness is good
+ Lots of ports, especially for an Ultrabook™, 3x USB3, miniDP, HDMI and Ethernet.
+ RAM, HDD and mini-PCIe slots easily accessible
    - Keyboard is the worst I've used on a Latitude, too much flex.
    - Fan kicks in and is quite noisy on low loads
    - Average battery life
    - Touchpad and audio drivers are buggy
    - Creaky plastic palm rest

Re: Features - QOTW: Which laptop do you use?

2 weeks ago picked up via Fleabay the first laptop i've owned that has is design-lead, a Samsung 9 series Ultrabook.
SandyBridge Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB mSATA (these things are still really expensive!), and a battery that still has 3 1/2 hours charge (which is fortunate since these buggers are not easily accessible / replaceable). £340.
Am really chuffed with it, but recognise it's more of a 'desire' purchase than a need.

Don't use a Laptop anymore, as I bought a Dell Venue Pro 11, which is more portable and does the basic's that most laptops can do. Everything else there's my Desktop.

I've got a 13" Macbook Pro which I bought a few months ago to replace my Air. Great build quality, great screen (a Retina one), it's light, it's fast, it does everything I want. Pricey but worth it IMHO especially as it easily hooks up to all my Apple doo dahs around the house.

Re: Features - QOTW: Which laptop do you use?

I just got a Dell Inspiron 7537, had been eyeing it for quite sometime and loved the aluminium build. Have to say it's been a solid laptop, with the built-in Nvidia GT 750 i've been able to play most games without any issues (Watch Dogs, NFS Rivals, Max Payne 3).

The best thing about it is the battery life. If I turn it to power saving, it can last well over 8-9 hours before coming down to 10% (I mainly watch movies or work on the web).

So, i'd say its a great buy.

There are a lot of negative reviews for this model and its 17" bretheren, have you had any of the problems like the failing to wake from sleep?

Re: Features - QOTW: Which laptop do you use?

Hmm, I've got two laptops - a work one and one that's my personal one.

The works one is an HP ProBook 6570b and the best I can say is that it's okay, it's nothing special, just a bog standard "business" machine running Windows 7, probably no different to the alternatives from Lenovo or Dell. 7/10

My personal one though is an eBay'd Dell D620. Now this one runs Ubuntu (12.04LTS at the moment, but I really must get around to upgrading to 14.04LTS). The memory has been maxed out (3.5GB), the optical drive replaced with an HDD, (used for picture/video storage), and there's a second external HDD connected via it's not-quite-USB docking connector, (for backups). If that wasn't enough, then there's also a PC Card-based eSATA card driving a 500GB RAID1 DAS, this being used for holding various virtual machines and ISO images. Oh, and the boot drive was replaced with a 120GB Samsung 830 SSD. I did all these upgrades because there were service manuals available and so could figure out how to do the replacements.

This one I really like since it "just works" day in, day out. I should get around to upgrading to a better system sometime because basically this system gets used in "headless" mode - driven via NX remote desktop. System is used for various script and programme developments along with some OS testing (the VM's include Windows XP, various flavours of Linux and a pair of Solaris VM's - all properly licensed). And if I ever undock it these days then it came with the Dell extended battery - so I can expect 3hrs+ on battery. This laptop I'd rate 10/10.

Re: Features - QOTW: Which laptop do you use?

Clevo P170SM, a little on the large side but it was brought to replace a dtr laptop and a desktop in one about 16 months ago. Have yet to find anything that flusters it. All games run at max settings.

    Spec wise it's a i7-4800qm with turbo over boosted to 41/40/39/37. GTX-780m (4gb), twin 256gb samsung 840 ssd's in raid 0, 16gb of ram.
It's spec'd to last me a long time.

I've got an Asus N55SF that I bought about 3 years ago. It's got an i7 and it's currently used as a sofa surfer and occasional work PC when rigged up to my monitor. Can't help but think I haven't really made full use of its capabilities...

Re: Features - QOTW: Which laptop do you use?

Lenovo G505S. Super budget laptop (£313) but has a A8 4500M(7640g) and 8570m giving me decent graphics when the dual graphics can kick in! Was looking for a real budget gaming laptop and this seemed the best bet to me. Would have had to have spent £500+ to have got decent single GPU performance. Also saved a lot of cash getting this as German no-OS model from amazon. Sticking in a second stick of RAM also helped. Just wondering if an SSD upgrade is a good idea or not. An SSD made such a difference pre-Win 8 but doesn't seem to have quite the same effect now...
