Re: Features - QOTW: Will you be upgrading to a 4K monitor?

I think 4k will probably get skipped over quite quickly in the PC industry. It's a very odd resolution offering just a little extra over the best stablished 2560 x res. the new retina iMac and dell monitors (5k) are more likely where things will go. Now it's not about how much stuff fits on my screen, it's about the quality of it which Mac os scales very well and hopefully windows 10 will too.

Price of monitors + GFX graphic cards + bad support for SW = No way

Not for a good while. I bought 2 nice Dell 24" 1080p displays for my desktop and at the moment I have no desire or need to go larger. It'd have to be 27" for 4k at any rate and it starts to get more expensive.

Nope - not worth it especially when you need to get an expensive gfx card too.

Re: Features - QOTW: Will you be upgrading to a 4K monitor?

I've been looking into this recently as I noticed the prices have come down quite a lot and even though I don't have a GPU good enough to display that resolution at any respectable frame rate, I'm still quite tempted, but I have a few niggles. Major ones ie being the 30Hz refresh rate, weirdness to force 60Hz which doesn't work properly for anything if at all thus is pointless and TN panels.

    - 60Hz or more (GSync as a bonus)
    - IPS
    - Small(ish) screen size to up the PPI considerably.

Mainly because I noticed a difference going from 21.5 TN to 23" IPS @ 1080p, especially when trying to watch netflix in bed. Also,

    - built in speakers (even if they suck, better than nothing)

If I could get all of the above for £350 or less I'd be more inclined to give it a go, but if I could get all of the above and a better GPU to drive it all in that budget I'd be on it already.

    3. 2560x1600 is better then I require right now for gaming and I have 2 of them for desktop work
    4. For the living room I can't see much benefit from 1080p>4k in video quality terms (full bitrate 1080p still looks gorgeous and better than over-compressed 4k), nor do I see much content to do it justice coming any time soon and again I don't want to double my gfx power to game on it
Agree with all of these points.

Re: Features - QOTW: Will you be upgrading to a 4K monitor?

Lacking in usable content, tech required to power it very expensive, monitor itself highly expensive... why would anyone right now outside of work reasons/showing off? Look how long 1080P took to be the norm with non-gaming media (it still isn't for a lot of it). With 8K already on the horizon and pretty much no way to get that resolution in existence, it seems display tech is far outpacing actually being able to run it.

I have done, and actually it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Right now I have my 4K TN flanked by my 1080p IPS screens and it takes threads like this to remind me that there's supposed to be a problem.

Don't get me wrong - if IPS was a small premium over TN, I'd take it. But if you're not doing colour critical work, and I'm not, then I wouldn't say it's a deal killer.

Re: Features - QOTW: Will you be upgrading to a 4K monitor?

Nope. 1080p is more than enough for me and my graphics card to cope with. 4k is nothing more than a sales gimmick at the moment with the cost of it and processing power required to make it viable

Even If I can afford one, which I can't by the way, I'd rather upgrade other components than sink a hell lot of money on a screen.

Not anytime soon, hope Samsung, LG, or Sony think of adding g-sync or free-sync and displayport to their TV's that would be an upgrade I'm up for, for the upcoming steam consoles.

Atm, I am only interested in 21/9 technology, in 2.5K, much more interesting personally.

Re: Features - QOTW: Will you be upgrading to a 4K monitor?

i recently purchased a 28" 4k sammy monitor to replace my triple screen 1080p 24" setup. so far various apps has scaling issues. text is tiny (but 150% its fine). games run smooth but at low settings. Would i go back to 1080p screens probably not. just love how it is so hard to see the pixels. especially in games. No need for AA.

Tried out a 4k AOC monitor the other day as was building a new system for a customer.
While it was nice in games, on the desktop things were so small it was painful.

I'll stick with my 29" 2560x1080 for years.

When I can game on decent settings using just the one card on a 4K 30 inch monitor for decent money.... bring it on!

Re: Features - QOTW: Will you be upgrading to a 4K monitor?

Short Answer: Not any time soon.

Longer Answer: My 1920x1200 Dell U2412M is working just fine thanks. I'll need an upgrade soon because my second monitor is 6 years old and losing pixels, but the price that 4k dictates is too steep for me to justify it. I'll probably upgrade next summer and I won't be able to spend more than £400 on the monitor so unless 4k monitors take a dive in price and a bump in quality (I don't favour TN panels) then I'll be looking at other monitors.
