This appeals to me in more ways you can imagine :)
These are the last things I think of...
If a phone camera "will do you", then a marginally better one isn't going to make a huge difference.
If your at a party, plug phone into stereo (stereo jack, USB or dock) or use bluetooth or Wifi (DLNA).
The only thing I see these as being useful for is upgrading RAM or CPU for a newer OS......but then you'll have an old screen and will probably want to upgrade that...
Might as well do 12-18 months on contract for a new phone and then 12-18 months on sim only to recoup costs.

That's assuming that when you get to the party, the host hasn't been "clever" and got one of those docks that only has a Lightning connector. :p I agree with Lee actually, being particular excited by the idea that perhaps a camera module with a proper optical zoom (a la Galaxy Zoom) might be available. Sure it's never going to replace a proper camera, but for something good enough to get some holiday snaps (camera bores need not apply - obviously) then it might be a plus point.
No, for me the interesting part of Ara was the mooted idea that we could get modules that give capabilities that either aren't widely available, or in some cases aren't available at all. Fancy a large screen phone with a USB port for example? Or one with a RJ45 so you could plug it into a network and use it as an analyser?

First part - agree. Second part - no, no, no. Any LG G3 user will know that other folks have slagged them off rotten about having an "unecessarily" high resolution screen. And unless screen LCD's degrade noticeably over time then the screen would be the last thing I'd replace. Heck, the screen on my old Galaxy S3 was probably good enough - digging up the anti-G3 argument that anything over 1080p is wasted on a typical smartphone.

Downside is that 12 month contracts with phones are few and far between, most telcos - from what I've seen - prefer to lock you into a 24 month deal.

Three cheers to that.
