Question is, are these just FreeSync by name or are they actually effective at producing completely smooth motion? I thought IPS would be too slow.

For the non-dynamic refresh rates, yes - the one supported by most GCN AMD cards where you say "I'm playing a movie at 24fps or want to refresh 2D content at a solid 30fps".

Where you want to a have dynamic refresh rate like gaming you want to tell the monitor to change the v-blank delay between frames (ie slow down/speed up refresh) based on the last frame's render time (or presumably average of last 3 frames in reality). Then the graphics card can send the next frame when it expects the monitor is ready. It's not really what I'd call synchronising, you're setting the refresh rate of the monitor to your best guess of how you think the card with render the next frame and then applying v-sync to match that target. (And it's sadly only newer AMD cards to boot )

Which is still fine and will be better than nothing on a higher latency IPS display, but IMHO the best gains will probably be seen on a low latency monitor which can go from a long render time frame to updating the next frames ultra quickly and so reducing input lag. Who knows? I could be wrong and the best gains might be in the low fps areas, though it's noticeable that G-sync I think only goes down to 30hz at the lowest, so you don't get problems with dimming etc.

If only they had put Curved and Freesync together, it would have been a flight simmers dream! (3x34" Curved Freesync).....

As a multimonitor flightsimmer now im stuck, curved or flat with freesync..

I love the ultrawides, I've been holding out as I can't justify replacing my Dell 27 UltraSharp but now they are throwing freesync in there as well? Hmmm!!

My only issue is that at the moment nVidia aren't going to be supporting Freesync and I don't want to be locked into a GPU choice due to my monitor
