Re: AMD Radeon R9 380X expected to be launched in Q2 2015
Seeing as only the top layer of the new memory will be in contact with whatever is cooling the memory, would it be a fair guess to say that the chips will have to stay within there designed operating frequency ? ie - non overclockable.
Re: AMD Radeon R9 380X expected to be launched in Q2 2015
From what I have read the stack uses interconnections to transfer heat. I'm sure 3d memory will be overclockable, but even a small increase in frequency should yield a huge amount of performance because the memory bus width is phenomenal.

The site also says that the upcoming card can utilise up to 300W, which is backed by rumours of it coming with a water cooling system as standard.
If true, then what the heck is the 390 going to ship with - liquid gas cooling? :o And what about a "390X"...
Can't see a "midrange" card having to come with fluid cooling as standard, so I'm going to chalk this up as "rumour".
Re: AMD Radeon R9 380X expected to be launched in Q2 2015
For 300W card (presumably on a 20nm process), this thing needs to be more than 2x faster than 290X! Otherwise in terms of performance per watt, AMD are screwed compared to NVidia...

It'll be on 28nm, it looks like 20nm is unsuitable for big complex chips like GPUs. The general assumption is that we will skip straight to 16nm (probably 2016), until then we are stuck with 28nm.
I imagine it will be similar to a 290X in it's power demands and heat produced.

I really don't think Nvidia are in a good situation right now. Nvidia need to come in faster and or cheaper than AMD to even the keel.
Re: AMD Radeon R9 380X expected to be launched in Q2 2015
This is pretty disappointing. So long as AMD are stuck with last-gen offerings Nvidia prices won't come down. Seems to have taken them ages to release this new iteration, I wonder if it'll be worth the wait?

There's Bucket loads of performance left in Maxwell yet. Bucket loads.

A GTX980 can do 224GB/sec, and here they are hoping for 512 or 640GB/sec? Yeah, if true that would be worth the wait. Just at the point that 4K displays are heading for mainstream as well where that bandwidth is needed.

Well I wouldn't know, but Nvidia need to get competitive on price and use that performance to offset what AMD are offering.
Re: AMD Radeon R9 380X expected to be launched in Q2 2015
Q2 expected... so Q3-4 when it will actually be available no doubt... hopefully my GTX660s wont give up on me before that!
Re: AMD Radeon R9 380X expected to be launched in Q2 2015
Looking very interesting, not had a reason to upgrade my 7950... yet

It's only 10-20W TDP more than a 290X isn't it? So as long as it's 10% faster then it's at least the same perf/watt.

liquid gas cooling?
Not sure you really thought that one through there.

And you didn't either - for example Nitrogen (a gas) when extremely cold goes to a liquid - hence "liquid gas". Ok, perhaps I should have been more precise and said "liquified gas cooling" but that's what happens when you're trying to dash off a Hexus message before diving into a meeting.
Freon, and other refrigerants, are similar.
