No limits, except for the ability to play.

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
So, F2P if you choose an electric car then?

LOL!
'Ooooo I can afford that nice shiny engine upgrade... Oh wait that would push my fuel economy right down, better not'

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
It's so similar to the dungeon keeper fiasco that I fully expect them to get fined for it if they release it in this state.
Won't bother me though as I like driving games.....something NFS isn't....hell the last two didn't even support wheels.

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
As already said calling it 'No Limits' and having an IAP like that is a complete joke.
Game looks reasonable from the trailer but I can imagine it'd drive me insane (pun intended!)
I managed to play real racing 3 for a while before that got silly with wait times.

The fastest, most heart-pounding experience you'll ever have in a 1.0L Fiesta EcoBoost.

Firing on all 3 cylinders!

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
By making it such an obvious resource, they've probably screwed up a bit here. But charging people to continue playing is nothing new - I'd say it's one of the key ways that mobile games are funded given the range that I've tried. It does irritate me though - I really don't see the point in playing a game that I'm going to have to stop playing in 20 mins unless I want to pay.

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
It just makes it very hard to know the final cost of the game. The App Store has created a market for lemons, this rush to the bottom, no one researches what to buy, no thought goes in to it, everyone expects everything to be a bit rubbish.

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
Yeah one of the only companies that seem to of gotten F2P right is HiRez with Tribes and Smite. Either unlock stuff slowly in game, pay for little items you want or just pay £29.99 for the game that gives you everything. Thank you very much.

Can you cruise with the clutch down?...
-
Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
In all fairness this is exactly the same as Candy Crush and other small mobile games, they are exploitative. But in a way they suit my needs; by being able to play them for a short while and then the "pay for more lives" model stops me playing for too long.
I'm assuming the game will be given away for free due to the limited play and the key point is that mobile games are a small part of my personal phone usage, dont find them overly addictive.

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
EA just doesn't have a clue when it comes to online games... the prices are so stupidly high in their other need for speed (world) and now they want to charge for an essential item in a car racing game...

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
I can't think why EA keep on being voted one of the worst companies in the world.
They do things like release Theme Hospital for free to help get the public back on their side, then they go and undo it a few days later with **** like this.

Always makes me smile that - given that "the world" to the folks awarding these titles seems consist solely of the 50 states. So what's the rest of us living on ... terra incognita, mongo, etc?
Petrol as an IAP is a non-starter in my book, then again, is it me of are ALL EA games becoming pretty in-your-face about putting in reviews and buying the nice shiny, shiny IAP? I've been playing through Plants v's Zombies 2 and it's getting kind of annoying (although there you can at least get a pretty good experience without having to pony up a bean to EA). Peggle Blast is the same, very much "buy, buy this now, why haven't you bought this"...
By the way, I've always found Ubisoft to be worse than EA, with Activision somewhere in between.

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
This isn't the first game to do this is it???.
I vaguely remember playing CSR racing and they also had a petrol gauge that went down when you raced.
(And those races were really short)
Are there even any free games left in app stores. Before we used to have a chart with top free apps, which strangely I can't find anymore.

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
Can't wait for the next Battlefield game... you will have to pay for ammo.
-
Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
Who remembers the days when you brought a game and it worked 100% and was 100% complete without any need to buy anything else.

I knew the NFS franchise had gone down hill in recent years, but cars without wheels is taking it a step to far. :innocent:

2 things jumped to mind!
1) This is the birth of the all knife servers!
2) This video jumped to mind! Warning, it's Chris Rock, he isn't PC!

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
"making petrol an IAP in a car racing game" Oh man this is one of the funniest things I've heard for ages. Can you get Nectar points? Wonder if it'll be self service or will you be able to pay a bit more to have someone fill 'er up and clean the windows?

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
Do I have to pay extra for an engine, headlights, body, wheels, etc. ?

No, you'll probably get ammo ...of the blank variety. Live ammo costs, though. :p

Very true.
How long before your "game" is a actually nothing more than a base engine onto which you bolt a selection of DLC to get something playable?

What you mean like Evolve?

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
buying petrol and car upgrades for real money... sounds a bit too much like my real life tbh.
-
Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
I have played a racing game that was along these lines. It was a 'drag racing' mobile game where every time you raced your car picked up 'damage' and you had to either wait for it to be fixed or use IAP to get game currency to fix it. To make matters even worse, if you hit anything your car got more damaged, but there were rounds where the aim was to run over a load of cardboard boxes on the track, which meant you couldn't complete the round without picking up additional damage! And yes, running over a cardboard box did as much damage as hitting another car, concrete wall etc. Obviously...
The worst part though was the fact that, even though you had a 'garage' with multiple cars, only the one that was 'selected' at the time would actually repair itself. So you could use all your cars until they were all 'broken', leave the game overnight and then in the morning one car would be fixed but all the others would still be completely broken. Shameful.
There were many other things about it that were unbelievably awful too but suffice to say it was probably the worst game I have ever played.

Race Room Experience.

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
what a ridiculous way to get money. This is basically a timer that lets u play for a bit and then either pay money to play more or wait, hidden as buying gas instead of just a literal timer. What a joke.

Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
It would be neater if they had implemented MPG and tank size, but it looks like a "full tank" lets you race and there's not any mechanics besides that. Boring.
-
Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
As much as I hate EA and this sort of business practice, we have to accept that gamers are mostly to blame for companies getting away with this sort of thing. Even with something as absurd and anti-consumer as this there will still be hundreds of thousands of people playing and paying to play.
-
Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
The game is only simulating real life! :)
-
Re: EA's Need for Speed: No Limits has petrol as an in-app-purchase
Sounds just like every other f2p title out there where they try to get you hooked and then pay to keep on playing like an addict

Totally agree. Actually if memory serves me rightly, does Forza 4 do something like that on the higher levels - basically so you can't just drive like a lead-footed idiot and expect to get away with it.

I wish EA would just implode
