Not a whole lot of details. But, to hear 14nm and a potential release date is exciting Thing is, I've already been holding out for a while to build another gaming rig. I can't wait that long. Hopefully Amd will phone in with a confirmed release date soon. Otherwise, I'll have to give my money to Intel this time round... :/

I wonder if the 95W TDP includes Opterons too? Because it seems a bit... low. It pretty much covers desktop/mobile/smaller servers, but I'd expect more for many-core x86 server parts. Unless it's only a specific part being talked about here rather than all of the applications for the core itself.

It's hard to say without knowing how each core performs but on the face of it, I'd say it was a tad high.

On 22nm, Intel have shoe-horned 18/36 cores/threads into a 145w package with the E5-2699 v3.....2 years earlier than these chips.

I wonder how they will produce 2 socket server systems, unless they are giving up that market for Seamicro style systems.

TDPs tend to stay fairly steady on this class of chip while the core counts/caches are increased; Beckton and Westmere were 130W, SNB skipped the E7 but still crept up to 150W, then 155W on IVB E7, and Haswell actually goes up to 165W for the E7.

    @Danceswithunix: Yeah that's what I'm wondering.

Its good that they are going to share a socket with the APU's as it gives us the hope of being able to build FX powerhouse into mATX and ITX boards.

Just a shame its taking them so damn long to release something. Heres hoping (but doubting) for another AMD resurgence to the top!

Re: AMD's 'Zen' to arrive with 'Summit Ridge' CPUs in Q3 2016

If only this were slated for Q3 2015... but at least it's some kind of sign from AMD, even if it's a year and a half out.

That said, my FX 8320 @3.6GHz does perfectly for what I need it to do. I could run it faster, as it'll easily do 4GHz at default voltage settings, but the extra heat it generates is immense for such a relatively small increase in speed. (The extra 11% in clock speed sounds great, but doesn't make any difference to my tasks in real terms.)

But there's the thing, if they are moving to a traditional threaded model same as everyone else does then they get the same advantages/disadvantages as them including Intel. AMD might be able to catch up, but overtaking is hard when you basically have the same product. They have to have a stupidly wide issue CPU to handle 2 threads well which improves single threaded performance just at a time when single threaded performance matters less and less.

A threaded ARM chip would be mildly interesting I suppose.

Ditto here, (except I'm still on a 1090T). That's it's Q3 next year isn't good news - although perhaps this means that I can pick up a "bargain" current gen FX come Christmas time if the ole 1090 starts creaking at the seams. Presumably a this new Zen processor will need a new motherboard too, so I'll leave off the system rebuild for Christmas 2016.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

    and probably some DDR4 ram.

Possible opportunity for AMD there. If they could knock out a DDR4 variant of one of the current chips on an FM3 motherboard that might get a slight performance boost now and get the next gen motherboards out there.

Re: AMD's 'Zen' to arrive with 'Summit Ridge' CPUs in Q3 2016

    WTF AMD:

    http://www.kitguru.net/components/cp...-for-desktops/

So Kaveri refresh this year and Carrizo for desktop in 2016??

That means Zen is first coming to laptops??

    Edit!!

Not sure if the Bristol Ridge rumour is true, but it does increasing seem Kaveri will still be current until next year for desktop.

    Fail.

AMD better pray that Skylake is delayed for desktop.

    Second Edit!!

How are they going to compete with ancient products in desktop for another two years??

They should be aiming to release Carrizo for desktop this year, otherwise a £90 Core i3 by 2016 will be as good or faster on the IGP side than what AMD can muster, meaning there will be really no point in buying an AMD APU on the desktop unless they deep discount them even further.

It appears they are more obsessed about trying to clear old inventory than trying to be competitive in any way, since they are worried newer stuff will make the older stuff seem less competitive! News flash! They need to worry more about Intel doing that. At this rate they will need to keep writing down their inventory each year more and more like they had to this quarter, since Intel is quietly gnawing away at their IGP advantage.

Couldn't they work out some cut price deals to offload the older inventory to OEMs in pre-builds or something??

Not sure if that would work so well.

You can already get a 2 core APUs from AMD for under £22 including VAT http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-a...mhz-65w-retail

£70 gets you a Kaveri 7600 quad core. Really, I don't think they can get much cheaper.
